    Fuel Regulator Issue

After a few mechanics and alot of aggrivation, ive come to find out that my idle problem was the fuel regulator.
Now unplugged it idles and runs fine, with its plugged in its VERY delayed in revving if at all.
The mechanic that found it said to just leave it unplugged and not bother replacing it.
Would this not give me really bad fuel efficiency???
    I am a beginner!

It was a cable that was connected to the small black block on the right of the fuel distributor.
Thats what my mechanic called it anyway, on my autodata programme it says its the differential pressure regulator.
I posted a pic to show too.

If I'm not mistaken that is a k-jet mechanical injection you have there and one of the later ones that has Lambda fitted to it , so what you are disconnecting is the closed loop control.
Basically the the system is still mechanical but has electronics added for lambda .
The electronics control the regulator you are unplugging.
It works by altering the fuel pressure to the metering head to adjust fuel mix.
IF I'm right it sounds like you may have a dead lambda probe or bad wiring.
As far as I'm aware there is no other thing that could be plugged in that type of injection system
that would do what you are saying.

I would try replacing the lambda first before leaving the regulator unplugged.
The lambda is in the exhaust downpipe. Should have a part number on it so you can order up a new one.

You say you need a new downpipe gasket , is this leaking before the lambda sensor ? If it is it will be throwing the lambda off and making the ecu think the mix is very lean , if this is the case this alone may be your problem and the lambda may be OK still.

try german an sweedish for parts.

Ok well my friend had a look over the car and said the downpipe itself is rotten and the gasket is gone and the bolts have seized on. Where abouts is the lambda sensor?
Is it just a sensor that is sticking into the downpipe?

yes , you should be able to see it, it should be just after where the pipes end up as one .

The gasket which is gone is between the downpipe and the cat so i guess its after the sensor.
Any ideas what to do as i am ordering parts today and dont know what to replace or check.
                            Cheers Jo

just get a new lambda and try it , as it is the most likely culprit .
