What I do is custom tuning. Custom tuning means I have access to some data that no one else outside of Germany has, and with the help of that data, I can reconfigure basically any output of the ECU in order to do what I want it to do.

Everything else is just programming and practice.

Being able to program your S2 with the same computer you just typed the above message with(provided its a laptop ofcourse). You can play with engine timing like you were HG Wells.

          Same here

The laptop I use for typing on this forum is being used for mapping all the cars I do, that range from 1.9 TDIs to 2.7TTs and of course 2.2 20v turbos and 1.8Ts.

Thus, the difference between standalone and OEM is not as obvious as it may seem. For me, Motronic is just as good as any standalone system, but not for everyone.
I do however agree that for race cars mostly, where changes might be needed between 2 special stages can be necessary, standalone is a lot more flexible because it allows the end-user to modify the data himself.

However, programming standalone is really easy and you guys who use it are really lucky, because everything is offered to you, all parameters, scalings and stuff, whereas on a Motronic, each time a new ECU or even a new software version for an existent ECU comes out, I have to search for all the data "manually" and it sometimes takes hours and hours of work looking at binary code and trying to understand everything that's out there.

Then there's also the very fine line between knowing and not knowing what you're doing, and having a standalone system won't help at all if you're always after more and more and you end up ruining your engine.

My job is to do what people ask me to, but sometimes I also have to say "sorry but I can't do that otherwise reliability will be an issue", and such questions are not being asked often enough by some standalone systems users.

Having said all this, I don't have anything against standalone management systems, I've also known Javad for quite a long time and I do really admire him for his work on the 034EFI system, which, in its IIc version, is a really complete engine management system. Had I not had the enormous chance of getting to know all I know now, I'd have been using 034 for about 3 years now....

          Cheers and peace on earth!
