Ben, which hose did you go for in the end? I was thinking about the hose problems the other day, is there no way that the fabricators could put a U bend type pipe in the one side so all the pipes go back in the right direction?

I got the FC332 hose. It turned up about half an hour after that post.

I think maybe the design of the tank could be modified for future versions so that the inlets are in a better position. I was planning on venting the tank under the wheel arch so designed it with that in mind.

Instead I think I will have it feed back into the intake as in the factory setup. Only I will feed it in between the air filter and MAF instead of between the MAF and turbo. That way boost won't be affected if the pipework devlops a leak. My only concern is that if the tank fills up it will pump oil over the MAF.

I'm abusing my position again tomorrow and sending one of my drivers to fetch me an ITG JC60/80 cylindrical filter. ITG are based in Coventry so it's only down the road. They are giving me 20% discount as I'm trade as well

Once I've got that I shall start constructing a dahlback style intake system. I'll tee the pipe between the filter and my shiny new RS2 MAF so I can connect the breather.

I should be able to give a full report on it all before Billing as it's going in to have the tank, samcos and a couple of other bits fitted and the aux rad. removed.

That is of course assuming Beetie doesn't blow his up again

I've no immediate plans to blow mine up again, thank you! Just waiting for the samcos to be made and then hopefully it'll start boosting again!
Im deffo interested in a tank, as when i get my samcos, i dont want oil all over the inside of them, and wherever else the bleeding oil will go to.....

If your venting it back to the otherside of the MAF it will be metering the same air twice wont it?

Will that be a problem though?

The air in the oil breather system is seperate from the intake system AFAIK. I don't think it is part of the metered air system. Otherwise MarkH et al would have boost leaks caused by venting to atmosphere.

The only connection to the boost side is via the MAF to turbo hose connection (and any blow by gas from the piston rings but that is on the exhaust side of things so again doesn't affect metered air measurement)

I could be wrong, and would rather know now if I am.

              Ben,
I think your right about the breather gasses being seperate from the intake system as these are primarily made up piston of blowby and are a by product of the combustion process...........But it might cause a problem teeing it in before the MAF, there will still be some vapour in the breather gasses, cylones are good but they will not remove 100% of the oil vapours, and these will Kack up your Maf wire after a while.
IMHO I would place it after the MAF.

Of course I could be wrong

              Cheers,

The oil left in the air is a concern. The reason I want to put it before the MAF is I'm trying to minimize connections into the intake pipework to reduce the number of things that can cause air leaks.

The other option I thought of is to vent it right in front of the air filter. I'm building a heatshield around to filter area (a la dahlback) and have a small breather filter that could sit in the air stream in front of the main filter.

Having said that, I might as well just vent it under the wing rather than bring the vent all the way back to the airfilter.

Do you have any problems with your tank dumping oil under the wing? As your tank is not baffled I would have thought there would be more oil in the air flow and I'm curious to know how much oil you get from the breather vent. Also do you notice any problems not having a vacuum pulling the vapour through?

                Ben

                  Ben,
My tank is 'baffled' with a stainless scourer that does pick up the worst of the oil and allows it to drain out of the bottom of the tank to the sump. The only problem I had with venting under the wing was blowby gasses making their way back into the engine bay through the small gaps between the wing and inner wing and then back into the cabin area via the heater fan, but only whilst sitting in traffic. But my old engine was venting/breathing a lot because of wear.
After I get the new engine in I will tee into the DP as Bigtoe mentioned in an old thread as this creates vacuum, but I had no problems just venting to atmosphere.

Food for thought. I may return to my original plan of venting under the wing then. I've still got the old AC pipe to the drier coming into the engine bay so I could vent out through this.

The guy who made the tank assures me that it won't need a vacuum to work well. It is a modified version of a sierra cosworth setup and doesn't use a vacuum when fitted to these.

I just stuck a filter on the top of the MOCAL catch tank.

I think I am getting the occasional smell of oil but certainly not as bad before the engine build. I haven't bafffled mine with a waitrose scouring pad - we don't get waitrose up here - and I doubt I could afford a scouiing pads anyway

Ben - I ran out of credit so couldn't reply to your last text:

Yes I have had some oil on my maf - maybe better oiling of the ITG will help - or just clean the maf a couple of times after oiling the filter

The RS2 Maf is a straight swap.

                        Cheers Doug,

I go the ITG filter yesterday. JC60/80 with 83mm intake. The 80mm version is only rated to 310Bhp and I don't want to have to buy a new one when I get round to changing the turbo.

I need to sort out someway to connect the ITG filter to the MAF and then I should be all set. I've got some exhaust heatshields from work to play with so should be able to knock up a nice heatshield for the cone.

Any ideas on what's best to connect them? I thought about flexible ducting (as in AC stuff in buildings) but am concerned about disrupting the airflow. Alloy pipe would be ideal but I don't know where to get it from with out paying the earth for it.

                        Ben

Silicon hose is good for connecting the filter to MAF - I might have a short section of 80mm ish - I will have a look tonight if you want?

It is always best to not mount the MAF solidly to the bodywork or solidly to turbo etc - I don't think they like the harsh vibrations much - I think most vag cars have problems with their MAFs due to being mounted too rigidly.

Carly's dad uses them all the time. Fancy not thinking of that one I blame it on work. Since I became Trade Parts Supervisor there is too much proper work that needs doing not enough to time to slack off and order bits for my car

Having said that I did have time to order some bits to try out. I've got a selection of intake pipes from the 5.0L TDi and 6.0L Phaeton on order as they would seem to be the right diameter and the right shape to mount my filter to the MAF.

They're on back order but should land in a couple of weeks. If they are right for job we'll be laughing as they are dirt cheap
