    running like a pig

just re-fitted the engine after replacing worn big ends, did the head gasket and cambelt at the same time, and serviced the head. Got it all back together turned it over a few times to get oil around everything with the plugs out. Plugs back in, turned it over, fired streight up, lumpy idle from a vacume hose i missed, pushed it back on, nice smooth idle restored. Ran it up to temp to get the cooling system sorted. Went to take it for a drive and as soon as you touch the throttle its lumpy/hessitant like not running on 5, tried to drive it up the road and its lumpy/hessitant the whole way through the revs, any suggestions?

Mine did this after a rebuild ,turned out I had damaged the maf, easily done, or it could just be a bad connection after reconnection. also check the earth wires at th back of the head.

timing seemed ok, is it better to use the mark on the damper pulley and lower timing belt cover or the flywheel mark and the edge on gearbox?
Maf is plugged in correctly and terminals cleaned, im running the apikol 1.8T coils all are seated properly and in order, everything else is connected.

              As above and

TPS plug - it'll tick over but won't rev without cutting... done this a few times.
ECU earths aren't done up tight to the IM.

I had a sensor plug become intermittent after disturbing teh old wiring. Rebuilt the plug and it was fine, need to find which sensor tho = VAG Com.

Stick Vag com on to it, this will rule all the sensors out and or bad earths. Then the next step would be to re-check timming using all the marks. And maybe a dial gauge on N0.1 piston at tdc.

                Cheers Terry

rite, the timing is checked, cam-cam and valve timing, everything is plugged in tps, mfts, isv, maf, all the oil pressure switches, cam pos sensor crank pos sensor, engine speed sensor... etc
Ive got the 1.8t coils on there, there all plugged in, but i think they might be faulty (tried them on my mates modified s6 and that ran like a bag of cac aswell, but they seemed ok on mine before the headgasket went...)
The other thing, ive got the exclamation mark in the circle is constantly flashing and when you first turn the key theres 3 beeps.. Oh and the water temp guage isnt working (mfts or faulty guage?)

(!) is probably the bomb needs to charge the pressure in the system up if its been stood for a while

Bomb, pressure, system what, whats it do, how does it build pressure, what are the symptoms of a lack or pressure in the bomb?

The car was stood for about 4-5 weeks... ?

the bomb is basically a high pressure vessel with a diaphragm against the the brake hydraulic circuit that "pushes back" against pressure built up by the PAS pump - but it only lasts so long, which is why you get 40odd pumps on the brake pedal before it doesn't give you any mroe assist - the built up hydraulic pressure drops over time too, so if the cars left standing for a while it needs to get charged back up by the pump. HTH

Symptoms are flashing (!) warning and not much assisted braking without engine running (assuming a previously good bomb)

And what rebuilds the pressure? And presumably all the bomb being "empty" or depressurised is going to cause the flashing(!) ?

The answers in Error404 original post and your quote, the PAS pump

If the bomb can't hold pressure however that's why you get the error

more likely though is that the cap for the hydraulic reservoir is dirty and needs cleaning

so basically just the engine running should build up the pressure? Would this error come up if the brake or pas fluid level were low?
