Any way to check a PCV valve ?

I removed the PCV valve and some of the breather pipes to clean everything out. The firetrap was a bit manky but cleaned up OK, evrything else wasn't too bad. There was some oily debris in the PCV valve but most of it appears to have flushed out. I was wondering if there was any way of testing the valve to make sure it's working as it should. I have searched but haven't found anything yet. There doesn't seem to be any resistance if you blow through it in either direction - is this normal ?
    Thanks in advance.

Looking from the front it's on the right hand side of the engine block near the back. Here are a couple of photos I found on the forum.

Any one able to help advise if there is any way of testing the PCV valve, or any pointers as to what to look out for which could suggest it should be changed ?
It looks quite clean inside now I've flushed it out but there was a film of oil on the flat circular outer side - does this mean it's probably leaking?
Maybe I should just change it anyway.

Mine looked awful and the investment was well worth it. Very cheap part. The hassle is more to replace it.

Its some sort of pressure regulator rather than a simple one way valve. Not sure how to test it to be honest.

You have to be specific about which valve you are talking about in the crankcase ventilation system. There are two: 1) the one-way or "bleeder" (ball valve) and 2) the more complex pressure regulating valve. The one-way/bleeder valve is either working or not (Not = stuck open or stuck close). Remove and shake. No noise? The ball is stuck. Cleaning might make it work again. The pressure regulating valve has a diaphragm inside.

Pop: TJ reply. You know my answer: IMO, keep all the stock AAN PCV system parts and locate the catch can between the pressure regulating/control valve and point where the system enters the tube going through the cam cover. Others might disagree but I think there were good reasons for the design of the factory PCV system and eliminating it is not a good idea, especially in countries in which the atmosphere is already heavily polluted by vehicle emissions.

My diafragm was ripped causing smoking issues. Very cheap part so would replace it as a safety measure.

Was referring to to PCV valve which is fitted just after the block breather, !

Should I be able to blow through the pressure regulating valve both ways ?

Ah, you mean the pressure regulating valve (sometimes called the pressure control valve which is unfortunate because the abbreviation PCV gets confused with Positive Crankcase Ventilation = PCV).

Flow is only supposed to be going one way but there is a small orifice that is never closed so if you blew through it from either end, there would be some flow. I don't know the source of these two diagrams but they do seem to explain the normal function of the pressure regulating valve under boost and no-boost conditions:
