    WTF is happening now...

Yesterday the missus took me out for a run in the S2 (I cant drive till my knee is better). We left Boro at 11 ish drove to Harrogate, then Skipton then across to the lakes and had a meal in Bowness, then drove home along the A66. All was fine till 2 mile from home. Kendra floored it to overtake and the car went "lumpy", very hesitant with almost no acceleration. So i told her to chill till we got home, then the car started hesitating at coasting speed, (60-70 ish in 6th). It coughed most of the rest of the way and seemed to be trying to stall but it just couldnt. Coming up to a roundabout the engine was trying to stall so ourlass gunned it, it coughed realy hard and then drove fine the last 300 meters, I am at a loss as to what it is. Any ideas anyone.

    Fuel pump?

Crap in the fuel line? ( not an instruction!)

Change the fuel filter, My car has been transformed since I changed mine (Mondeo).

If not that, this sounds like a boost leak (yup, one of those again.) Mine did the same to me when the rubber pipe to the throttle body wasn't clipped tight enough. It was cough, splutter, still drove, but when you asked for boost, it sort of coughed and farted all the way home, so drove off boost till I could get near a screwdriver.

On another note - David - Fuel filters in diesels need changing regular - must have been really clagged up if you notice a difference from changing it!

I think specified intervals are usually around 12k miles, depending on car. I used to change mine at 6 along with everything else on the Sh!truns I had, and am doing so on the wife's bora. The old one was clean, but I do it as a matter of course, plus I'm stupid, and let money slip through my hands like water.

        No more.

Leon TDI 150 run in now.

        Very slow.

        Needs a chip.

I have got the Samcos on, and the Mark H intercooler mod done, i have replaced all of the small bore tubing i could find in the engine bay with Samco 4mm stuff, the only thing i havnt changed is:
          1)The Turbo (later this year)
2)the WGFV diaphragm, although inconclusive i have tried to suck air through the open pipe at the top and got the valve to clunk.
3)the Recirculation valve-the plaggy valve linking turbo pressure side to intake
4)the WGF solenoid valve on the intake pipe
5)The pipe between the solenoid and the WG valve

Looked in the workshop manual and it says to test the exhaust for leaks by shoving 6 bar of air pressure up its ****. (dont much like the sound of that).
I will re check the timing belt tension as incorrect valve timing could cause such a problem but i am certain that wont have come undone.

            Re WGFV.

I've read on the forum that people recommend changing these as they do fail with time. My question is about the solenoid output tests as described on the excellent sjmautotecknic site. If the solenoid is heard to clunk on these tests does it mean the valve is definitely working or can it still be knackered with the correct output test operation. It seems a shame to just replace it if there's no need. However if the output test gives no guarentee I suppose the bullet needs biting every now and then.

Changed the lambda recently, mine was trying to stall the other day and wouldnt give decent boost, changed it and its on song again now

              Cheers,

I plan to change the solenoid, lambda probe and recirculation valve in the not too distant future. When i had my head off and the manifolds off, although the sparkplugs were ok in colour, the exhaust manifold was whitish inside and the lambda probe was white, isnt this a sign of the mixture being too lean?. After the fault yesterday the turbo/exhaust/wgfv all seemed to be hotter than usual, i have no EGT probe so cannot be certain.

interesting you say that, the old lamda i took off was totally white/grey. I'm running a homefry - Paul, could this be a sign of too little fuel? Seems to run perfect but worth a confirmation from you

Where i done my head off job at the garage the mechanics there said it looked as if it was running lean.
Might have to get it checked out.
