Anyone BTDT on a V6 2.6 to 2.8 conversion on a B4? James reckoned he'd heard you can just swap the heads, but IIRC the engine management system is subtly different on the 2.6 (no MAF?) and I don't know about TDC/Valve timings, etc. between the two. If swapping the whole engine in, I guess you'd have to swap the whole engine loom also?
the 2.8 has the switchable IM, long path at low revs for betetr torque, short at high revs. so better swap the whole engine, incl loom, because that feature makes the 2.8 a lot better than the 2.6 (and I've had both, so I can compare)
Yeah you can pick them up cheaper than that think I know someone with a very low milage engine up for less, i'd have to find out if he still has it tho.
@james - with the prices of engines/looms/ecu's dropping just s2 the car, its part way there already and james is selling his pearl white bumper which would go straight on, you've got the rest thats what i'd do imo.
edit - if you're interested in going that route i've got the engine mounts for a 5 speed cut out a car already
2.6 & 2.8 have different internal dimensions - funny enough... Certainly not a matter of swapping heads !
2.6 ECU runs without MAF - it is MPFI motor
2.8 ECU runs with a MAF - there are lots of variants right from 1992 on the B4 (80) thru later tweaks on B3 Cabrio. The AAH engine was also in Audi 100/A6 models and the first generation of A4 (B5 platform).
If you are going to do this - go for 5V head version of the 2.8V6 - this is designated AHA (not AAH) - this is most economical version and has best power potential - should be OBD programmable as well by likes of MRC for extra oomf.
Thanks guys, yeah just looking at doing a conversion on a nice looking car that's come up, but 2.6 isn't going to do it for me... yeah Peter, an S2 conversion would be fun, eh?
hmm,
12v tuning is a dedicated business, the 30v is a nice motor no doubt, but a completely different character. it so depends on what your goals are. 30v with a bolt on supercharger kit would no doubt be interesting. but also maybe expensive and complicated. have to get the 30v in and working (different brake servo e.t.c) not to mention brakes and handling of the car.
a modded 12v would be a vast improvement, and perhaps more straightforward. but then you enter the world of the 12v. lol.
i have spent hours and hours and hours reading / wondering/ considering.
at the moment, my 12v needs a new gearbox, but my 30v just needs petrol. is bog standard, civilised, quiet, fair performance. i have been practically all over the uk in it over the last 10 months.
will i ever get an s2? maybe one day.
really, perhaps the old v6's are best enjoyed as they are, keep it maintained and the rest of the car up to scratch and be happy.
hope the above is a helpful insight:mischeif:
if i could get into modding my 12v, that would be very interesting, but would require an extreme level of dedication and commitment, that i'm afraid is beyond me for now.

The AAH V6 is a lovely engine, its not mega fast but its silky smooth and sounds sweet
If you want to go faster, get an S2 IMHO.
Already got both... just need to get the S2 back on the road, but it's getting closer
I agree about the AAH though, it is nice as it is, I've owned two. The only things I would do are a port+polish and a TB port, etc. as some of the airflow is compromised, and a custom cat/exhaust job. The reason for this thread is that a nice 2.6 came up and I was wondering how easy it was to swap in the AAH... Oy, will I ever stop
