    Blink code 4444??

Well i managed to read the blink codes from my aby after advice from this forum, thanks for that

The code i've pulled up is 4444, but i cant find the description of this code anywhere?
The engine seems to run ok, although im only getting 0.4 bar boost - which is why i pulled the fault codes.

I have checked and double checked, and the code is definatley 4444?

    any one have any ideas?

    Thanks

    Dan

Yup, 4444 means no faults were recorded by the ECU.

I would say that no fault codes and only 0.4bar is more annoying than having a fault code.

Should run more boost than that. Sounds like you have a problem there

Talking of stickies - we need a good one on why engines only give 0.4bar... here's a quick swag...

0.4bar boost (or thereabouts) is what the factory wastegate provides by spring pressure alone. When the ECU has active boost control working properly this increases max boost to whatever ECU is programmed for (0.8bar on 3B or 1.2bar on ABY - factory figures).

A number of things can cause the ECU to turn OFF active boost control - such as excessive air leaks, a faulty MAF, excessive (or false) knock detection.

Another reason is if the high water temp alarm (R-pin on MFTS) is active - this tells ECU to shutdown boost - disconnecting MFTS is quickest way to check this one. Never gives a fault code...

Other more simple reasons for 0.4bar boost are that the wiring to the WGFV is broken - this is the wee solenoid ****** that the ECU modulates to control pressure into the wastegate... If this solenoid stays off you get 0.4bar boost... Similarly if the fuse to WGFV is blown then you get same symptoms. Such electrical niggles usually raise a fault code.

The WGFV can simply fail - even though the ECU reports no faults - its just mechanically stuck.

Right, about 6months ago i replaced the head gasket, as she was loosing water and overheating. Shes running fine now, as smooth as you like, but only @ 0.4bar. I replaced the mfts with new, tested the IAT and coolant temp sensors - both ok. After the rebuild it felt obvious that i had a boost leak - the mark h intercooler mod sorted that. At this stage boost was very intermittant, turning on and off like a switch, hot or cold, but it would never hold on boost. No violent cut outs, i could even hear the turbo speeding up and slowing down. Recently she just hasnt been picking up over 0.4bar. Boost gauge shows -0.8bar vacuum at idle, instantly picks up to 0 when you put your foot down and quickly builds to 0.4bar. If the WGFV was stuck, wouldnt it cause a fault? Thanks for the reply and any suggestions greatly appreciated! Dan.

yes it would cause that, and yes they do seize up. Not very expensive item to 'buy n try'. They do become lazy with age so might be worth changing anyway.

Ok then thanks! I will try this first. I suppose if i take it off and give it 12v i should see it working or not? I've got a mate locally with an aby, i could borrow his to try. Otherwise, where will i get one, quattro corner? Or is it a stealer job? Thanks again. Dan.

Stealer will supply, they arent that expensive. ABY one will work, even thou diff part number to 3B. But make sure you order the right one for your car, as different valves control boost in different ways (some react faster than others).

well i managed to get round to checking my WGFV the other day. Tried to supply it with 12v and nothing, wouldn't even draw a current! I tested with a digital multimeter and found it was open circuit!!

I will try and get hold of one next week now!

                      Thanks
