Is the fuel gauge and computer linked?

Ive had a bit of a look around the threads and not entirely sure i found what i was looking for.
Prob is the fuel gauge seems to be REALLY eratic. Half full to quarter then back, then half to nearly empty, them more worying, quarter to zip!
This is when taking it weasy on motorywasy so not entirely sure. Also, when its at about a quarter the computer like to sacre the hell outa me by telling me its empty!
is this a calibration problem or a dodgey sender issue?
    Many thanks guys

(and as i read in a reply to a post last night "this forum just makes you smile!)

Could be a dodgy sender or also AFAIK there is a resistor or capacitor or something on the instrument circuit board that damps the fuel gauge signal to stop it fluctuating too much - might be a problem with that?

have a search on here or audifans, IIRC its a replaceable - but i'd try another cluster / sender as a first check to try to diagnose the fault first

My guage is a bit sticky - when I had it out recently when my tank was out for some welding and a new fuel pump - I cleaned loads of skank off the sender contacts, hopefully it'll be a bit smoother now - worth a try first as its free!
