I'm glad it's fixed David, It must be a great relief.

When you open the fuel filter take care and don't use an angle grinder!

I don't know what the Audi Filter is like but it made a massive difference to my Mondeo!

How did you change that fuel filter ? Did you drop the tank ? I still need to get this done on mine.

        RIGHT YOU READY ................

firstly i put the car on a 2 poster ramp, undone and removed the
four 13 mm bolts which hold the tank straps.
i used a step ladder to just stop the tank fallling out completeley,
let the tank drop 2-3 inches, ( i dont think it will go any futher,
there is something else holding it)
this let me get to and loosen the allen key on the filter clamp/bracket
which holds the the filter in place, after it was loose i gave it a tap the
opposite way, it moved then gave it a tug towards me, move the little
1/2 moon shape plastic clip and out it came. ]

undo the 19 mm on the filter get covered in fuel (stings when it gets in you eyes)
remove the bolt at the other end of the filter i think 17mm and get covered in more fuel.

replace filter and do it all over again (get new washers other wise you get a drip every 30 seconds )

carry this out at your own risk i accept no responsibility

make sure you get a genuine filter not crossland or halfords etc
they dont fit the flow is the wrong way round
