compression test may not show up the problem, but it does sound like a possible h/gasket failure leaking between two adjacent cylinders. Audi dealer dont supply a kit of gaskets, they are all individuals. ECP used to sell just the headgasket, but couldnt sell the correct bolts (Audi only). GSF/ECP sell the wrong bolts BTDT twice!

Std unleaded wouldnt cause it to knock like that (well, shouldnt!), but usually headgasket failure will make it ping badly.... guess it could just be the very start of it. Try a compression test, and if that doesnt show it up it may need a cylinder leakage test doing (applies greater pressure to combustion chamber).

The usual give away with manifold blows is the missing studs either end of the manifold, usually the ones you can actually see.

gsf sell the 'reinz' head sets for 70 odd quid(my local engine rebuild place wanted £250!),make sure they send you one with a metal head gasket though as they sent me a paper one 1st off.

Well did a compression test last night and the results are as follows....

              Nu 1.........125 psi
              nu 2.........125 psi
              nu 3.........123 psi
              nu 4.........60 psi
              Nu 5.........60 psi

gaskets ordered from Main dealer today,so hopfully will get cracking over the weekend.

Thanks for the vid link GT500.....very similar noise, but not so severe i think? and the noise is coming from the back of the engine from the same place as the 2 down pots...
Is there any particular things to look out for when replacing head gasket?
              Many thanks James

I would get the seals for the water rail and change the small hose under the inlet mani for the turbo feed.
Leave all the exhaust mani and turbo on, its a bit of a heavy lift but saves loads of time and knuckles!

Check that the head surface and block surface are 100% dead flat using a straight edge. Make sure there is NO oil/water on the surfaces or on the headgasket when you put it back together.

I would take exhaust manifold off and replace all nuts/studs and the gasket etc, and check manifold flange for straightness, whilst the head is off.

                          Good luck.

Autodata is wrong! The MUST be replaced. Any bolt that has an angular torque and not just a Nm setting is a stretch bolt and so should be discarded after use. I have original factory manual and that says replace.
