    Oil Restrictor

After trawling the web for the past 3 hours I can't come to a conclusion as to whether or not an oil restrictor is needed in my gt3071r.

I am reading in places that an oil restrictor is not needed and some are saying that you dont need one. Some are saying that there is an internal one that you can't see and that fitting an external one can cause the internal one to block more rapidly???

Really lost with what to do at this point....jeez what a headscrew over a simple fitting.

      my $0.02:

all GTxxxxR (dual ball bearing) turbo's require the restrictor.... these are oil and water cooled, thus require less oil to work.

      taken from Garrett website:

      Oil & Water Plumbing

The intake and exhaust plumbing often receives the focus leaving the oil and water plumbing neglected.

Garrett ball bearing turbochargers require less oil than journal bearing turbos. Therefore an oil inlet restrictor is recommended if you have oil pressure over about 60 psig. The oil outlet should be plumbed to the oil pan above the oil level (for wet sump systems). Since the oil drain is gravity fed, it is important that the oil outlet points downward, and that the drain tube does not become horizontal or go “uphill” at any point.

I can confirm you need an oil restrictor for Garret GT series. I have a few spare ones I can give you for free. Just pay for shipping

I have one on my car , i used it on my Gt3071 and now on my 3076.
It has an inline sieve filter, so reduced chances of blockages.
I bought it from Forced Performance.

I havent used one in my gt-35 on my cossie, and have had no problems yet, but max oilpressure doesent exeed 4,5bar anyway.
This is ONLY nessecary when oil pressure is over 60 psi, otherwise you may come to a problem where you dont get ENOUGH oil.
Also, remember the oil return has to be minimum 10mm internal diameter or you can kill the oilseals in the turbo

S2 will exceed 60 psi when the engine is cold, 60 psi is what 4.1 bar

i see 5 bar at cold. And 4.7bar reving once warm, but for the most part the oil pressure is below 4bar. Only when you open her up it goes above 4.1

They need a restriction in the oil flow, they come with one by default except it doesn't limit it enough for the S2

Does someone knows the oil pressures the S2 engine gives at different engine speeds?

                        idle, 4000rpm & 7000rpm?

I'm installing a 3071 turbo, and I need this info to make the correct size restrictor.

                        Cheers!

You need the 0.030" restrictor for the S2
