    URS4 tapping noise ??

OK! I have a URS4 that i have done 150 miles in and i`m a little worried about a noise it has developed.

I was driving the other day and changed down and give it some beans to overtake and after enjoying the power and returning to normal speed i noticed a rattle that started off quiet and in the space of a couple of miles it got very loud, to the point i was dipping the clutch as i passed people at the side of the road,

Now i know i have a leaky sump gasket, so was aware that the level was not on max

put some oil in it just now and the loud tapping has gone (just after start up)

BUT i have this noise now

The engine ran smooth as before but my question is " will this noise go away when oil has managed to get everywhere or is it time to realise that my audi is rip before we really got to know each other ???? "

    Cheers
    Scott

that doesn't sound good, at least it doesn't sound like noisy hydraulic lifters

Not good, what is your oil pressure gauge reading? Possible oil pump failure? Sounds bottom end bearings but hard to tell for sure. Might get away with new bearings, depends how bad they are tho.

it sounds like its coming from the top front but not 100% on that

5 bar, oil pump good then. How much oil did you have to put in it after the noise started? Maybe broken cam lobe? If you think it's coming from the top, i'd pull the cam cover off and have a look. Seems way too loud to be the lifters.

Haven't heard the noise on your clip yet (at work currently) but check the spark plugs are tight. A tick/tap/rattle could be one (or two) coming loose.

BTDT, but seemed yours was getting louder than mine,it happended twice to me.the white round(like ceramic) on the spark plug coming loose caused this sound.Replaced with 5 brand new F5DPOR from the dealer. After a few months, the tapping noise sound was back again.the white round coming loose again. So Stay away from F5DPOR.
it's worth for you to have a look on the spark plug before beginning the Head job.

before you take of the valave cover, start the engine.
use a old one trick to check which lifter is bed. take a one peace of wood ,like a hammer have. one side put on ear the other side on valve cover. and check which lifter is bed. chek it one by one.

then you will heard which one is the noisyest one.

do you understand? but it must be a piece of wood.

on that princip you can check everything on car.

but it sems to me it is not a lifter. it is to loud. when the lifters is bed , few of them make a nois. not only one.

i have done the screwdriver test and it feels to be coming from the rear 2 cylinders around the inlet manifold

hopefully i will be able to inspect it today

I have seen broken valve springs, i'd start by taking the cam cover off and push the lifters down with your thumbs, you should be able to feel a difference in resistance if one has failed. If the smaller inner spring of the two fails it will operate normally but suffer valve bounce over 6000rpms, BTDT and bent a valve to prove it
