changing the spark plugs..am i being an idiot, help please..

    hey there folks,
I have the ABY engine and just wanted to ask...I've read the definitive guide to sparks, i'm not asking which plugs i need...but i'm desperate to change the spark plugs,
i've managed to remove the top cover/ignition coil carrier... with the allen key bolts... now i'm having trouble removing it off as the accelerator/bar/thingy at the end seems to block it...it looks like its held with a star key..is it necessary to remove this...to remove the lid?

if i do this... then how does this help me remove the sparks, which seem to be jammed under a fuel rail/black bar... anyone wanna walk me through this b4 i start and end up wrecking the whole thing?

i'm not usually a complete buffoon with these things..but it looks more complicated than normal... and i would rather have the knowledge there first b4 i attempt it...

    cheers guys!

Yes, you should take off the bracket you are talking about - it's easy enough and you would then be able to lift the cover up (with the long rubber jobbies underneath ) and clear of the head which will give you access to the plugs underneath - they are recessed quite a long way down into the head. You'll need a long plug socket to reach them. Be careful with the wires at the back of the cover, it's probably best to turn the cover over and lie it down upside down without pulling on the wires.

Are you looking at the injectors when you mention the black bar/fuel rail ?

Word of little warning - the torx screws in that throttle damper bracket are made from play-doh... soft as phook... invest in a couple of spare bolts - M6 from memory.

When the cover/coil pack assembly comes loose - gently lift it and pivot towards rear of engine to give access to the plugs - take care with all the cables... years of heat cycles makes them brittle.

how much force is required to get this to come loose. Have undone the four hex head screws on the cover and moved the damper bracket and still the cover/coil pack assembly doesn't seem to want to lift up easily. Have applied as much force to lift it as I dare with no success so just thought I'd check.....

Make sure you go back to those plugs in a while if you didn't feel the compression ring on each spark plug crush as you tightened the plugs to ensure they haven't / don't come loose.

                  My tuppence.

                  Kind regards.

When I did mine I found the wires that run out the back were restricting full removal. There isn't much spare play from the wires, and cable ties further along the loom only add to the problem.
I got there eventually, but be very carefull, as mentioned those wires are delicate.

Whenever I removed mine, the cover pretty much lifted itself up as I undid the screws due to the springs being compressed when the cover is tightened.
Seems strange yours does'nt want to move!

Mine also lifted up as the screws were undone and the springs decompressed but it is actually getting it off completely to access plugs is the problem at the moment....

                          Ah, that makes more sense!
Maybe the spark plug boots are so tight its created an airlock on them, which is making it hard to pull off

a wagner inlet manifold will make the job easy.

getting to bits on my engine is very easy. i can have the manifold off in an hour id say. tubes allow access to all bolts. the short runner cleas loads of space. biggest pig is wastegate and 1 turbo bolt. it can all be done with normal tools though which is good.

i know this isn't the answer to the question just my take. i think the standard setup is a bit of a pig to work with
