    RS2 intermittently cutting out?

2 weeks ago on a short drive my RS2 started intermittently cutting out. It would cut out for a spit second (die) and start up again (by itself) and keep on going. The car was just idling around town (no boost) doing a steady 50km/h. I got the car home, parked it up for the night, took it out the next day and everything has been fine until today when it started doing it again.

    Facts about the car:

    Superchipped (I know, I know . . .)
Roose boost pipes (2 months old)
    710 N (2 months old)
    Fuel filter (10 months old)
    Car has traveled 198,000kms.
Car has a full tank of 98

    Any ideas?

Cutting out like loosing a cylinder or cutting out like loosing all power and everything and just totally dies?

          Thanks for that.

Today the car started doing this issue again, I drove straight to my mechanic and took him for a run so he could experience it. Hes going to make some calls and get back to me, his words were "thats very strange".

Ill let you know how I get on.

The above link will be useful to check some areas of the car, thanks.

Well about time for an update, the car was scanned and nothing out of the of ordinary popped up and the car is getting worse. I was told just to drive the car until it stops and I meant to be doing a 1000km run trip in a 2 weeks

So after a lot of reading Im wondering if it could be a dirty MAF, a fuel pump relay or the idle stabilizer valve?

Also is the Idle Stabilizer Valve (ISV) sometimes known as the Idle Throttle Switch?

This issue is only happening on lite throttle, if I boot it the car gets up and goes without any cutting out.

i would try a second lamda and clean the MAF. If it is still doing it, i would also take the cap off to check the coil pipes. If they are ok, retighten the spark plugs to 20Nm and make sure they are all ok. Finally check the engine's earth cables, (1 brown coming off the coilpacks going to the rear right screw of the camcase + 2 screws coming from the ECU and are located under the inlet manifold where the cruise control module is connected)

The most likely cause is a coil pack though. I had cutting out under light boost which went away on high boost and it turned out that 1 earth cable from the coilpacks was slightly crushed and 1 spark plug slightly loose (just 1/4 of a click with a torque wrench)

The above suggestion is exactly what I thought when I saw the original post.

                      As in the ingnition switch?
The key doesnt really move at all when its inside the barrel though. And If I drive the car and wiggle the key nothing changes.

Or is there a separate switch somewhere?

                      Thanks for all the advice

Also, I got some isopropyl alcohol past night so Ill do some cleaning after work today.

The ignition switch is in two parts: the ignition lock cylinder, the part you put the key in. If you have the correct key, it also turns the second part, the true switch, as you turn the key. The ignition switch is made of plastic and is the part to which all the wires are connected. These plastic switches have a spring inside them to turn the key back to "run" after you have turned it to "Start" and then released it when you heard the engine catch. These springs eventually cause the plastic switch housing to crack. With the crack and no spring function to put the key in the correct "run" position, all manner of strange electrical events can and do occur.

I don't know where there is an Audi 80 ignition switch DIY but here is one for a C4 UrS car:

                        http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?p=18927576

Note: In the above, there was a suggestion to use loctite. Maybe blue but NOT red. The original red stuff was just red paint.

Here is a diagram of how the switch (No.5) related to the RS2 lock cylinder.

That '4A0' part number is the giveaway - same pesky ignition switch used on C4 platform as B3/B4. They aren't expensive either - I bought one for spares box recently.

Paul: Sorry, I have edited my post. That diagram (and the PNs) are for an RS2, not a C4. However, the C4 uses the exact same "B" switch as used on earlier RS2s (or vice versa).
