How test the health status of a K24/7200 turbo?

Hello friends, I have a question, is possible to check the health status of a K24/7200 turbo? I mean, if for example the car have a too high oil consumption and have blue smoke from the exhaust system when run at idle, that mean that the turbo is in bad condition? Or the problem can be in the pistons or valve rings? Thanks a lot!

Forget the turbo first... do a compression check on the engine.

General rule is that worn rings leak under load (or at idle if badly worn) and that valve guides leak on overrun.

If all 5 cyls show up OK - then its worth getting turbo seals checked / replaced by a KKK specialist.

Thanks a lot Paul, where can I find the correct value of compression for the ADU engine?

Yeh search for target pressure, but the real thing to look for is any significant difference between each cylinder. Sometimes worth doing this cold & hot to give more information.

Also, if there is low compression on 1 cyl, try pour some oil into the cylinder and test again to see if it is the piston-rings that are bad

intermittently smoke out on idle,REV up the engine for a while and (blue)smoke is gone. It's most likely from the bad turbo seal.I have 8 of K24s.I know how they behave when they were hungry for the oil.Bad impeller will end up with
some tone of whining under boost.

Hello friends, thanks a lot for your answers. If the problem is the turbo, I must find oil also in the boost hoses, is correct? Because I think that the oil come into the engine from the boost hoses, throttle body and then inlet manifold, is correct? Today I have try to start the engine in the garage, not test on the road, after about one minute at idle I had seen the first blue smoke from the exhaust system, then I had run the engine for some minutes at the idle and when I had accelerated I had seen a lot of blue smoke from the exhaust system. I had check the oil level and it is on the min also if it is very clear because, have few Km and one month ago was perfect at max level. I have always use only very good oils like Motul 300V Le Mans 20W60 before and now Castrol Formula RS 10W60, everytime change on 10000 Km or every years or also with less of 10000 Km and everytime I change also the oil filter, I use also the Sintoflon Protector, but I think that this problem is not caused by the oil quality, use of Sintoflon Protector, ecc.
Can the problem of little knock only immediately when overboost turn on that I had alwasy also if I had change all the parts that can cause this problem except the fuel pump, but the fuel pressure is correct, caused from the turbo that in overboost had a oil leak into the boost hoses and so into the engine? Or not?

If the problem is the turbo I think that I will make some upgrade on the car, probably also if the problem is the engine. What do you think about this tuned K24/7200 turbo? http://cgi.ebay.de/KKK-K24-7200-AUDI...d=p3286.c0.m14
I don't want fit a different turbo from the original one, from the outside I mean.
This is original, but for you is really a KKK K24/7200 or is a made in China replica?
                  http://cgi.ebay.de/Original-Audi-RS2...d=p3286.c0.m14

                  Thanks a lot friends!

                  Bye

Today I have speak with some people that are specialized in turbo refurb but refurb a K24/7200 is not very easy because is out of stock from 2001 and the only way is search a original KKK refurb kit or buy a new K24/7200 here in Italy. Do you know someone that can refurb this turbo without problems? Thanks a lot friends!

Surely any decent KKK agent can get the refurb kit...

Hello Paul, Ultimot Gmbh tell me that they have a optimized RS2 turbo, I want know if anyone have experience with Ultimot Gmbh. They tell me that have also the chips for this optimized RS2 turbo, wastegate spring and decat pipe, now I'm really confused because I don't know the quality of this tuner, for example I have read your post abot the chips for the RS2, where I have read that is possible to have also switchable chips? I want mount the new turbo with the Wagner exhaust manifold and probably Wagner Evo Intercooler for now, in the future is possible that I mount the reverse inlet manifold and the dedicated intercooler. I need also the complete Samco hoses now that I mount a new turbo.
                        Can you help me, please?

                        Thanks a lot!

I think spending that sort of money on a rs2 turbo is a bit over the top.

You can usually pick up a second hand reconditioned one for ~£450. Or just send your one of to have it rebuilt, shouldn't cost you more then £300. There is a few companies in Europe that can do this and it would save you loads of money in the long run, that's if your turbo really is on its way out.

But like others said, check the compression first. Do each cylinder in turn and then again with a dab of oil in the bore. If you see any massive differences then you could well be wasting your money buying a new turbo.

                            my 2 cents.

Reconning an RS2 turbo is quite hard, speak to AET they believe soon it won't be possible to do them as the parts won't be available to do them.
