good to know. I have read about the debate on whether or not to use main bearings with integral thrust washers. Has this ever been resolved one way or the other?

      No debate, don't use them

You'd need 7A cams and solid lifters to run to 8k ( very american / 034 though this target ) but that goes against your low spool, too be honest I think you need to decide what is more important, low end spool or top end, you can't have both it's all about balance.

The 7A's can be timed to give near stock spool, Audi_CQ or someone posted the details of how this can be achieved.

From what your saying your going to be in 3k you need to aim for mid range power how often will a car hit the rev limit?

A GT3071 or CT355 turbo is going to be what you want, with a ported head, consider large valves.

I have been reading about the gt3071 on garret's site and like the looks of it. The reason I want as high a redline as possible is because shifting hurts your lap times. All else being equal, if your car revs higher than your competition you have an advantage.

On another note though, when people switch to VEMS does it still control the after run coolant pump? Anyone have Audi specific links for researching this EMS?

        Thanks.

Not to take away from Herr Wagner's product but you 3B, ABY, ADU people need to remember that the AAN has a "reverse inlet" intake manifold from the factory. So the difference between the stock AAN inlet and Carsten's manifold might not be that much (compared to between a 3B/ABY/ADU intake manifold.)

On a different point, the rear diff of a 968 is directly related to the 01E trans of a C4 UrS car:

          94 UrS4 V8 6 spd manual avant

I missed the point on this....what were you shooting for?

The 2871 looks nice also and in truth probably fits my goals better that the 3071. Looks like these are both internally waste gated models. I thought that externally gated was better for a performance application. Maybe it was optional, I'll go double check.

the afterrun coolant pump is a discrete circuit, unrelated to the ECU. yes, it functions with VEMS.

I was responding to your comment "While my transaxle can't cope with monster torque I should like as much as it can handle for acceleration out of corners." I was just implying that since the 968 transaxle is related to the 01E transmission, it will very likely be compatible with the levels of torque that an AAN can put out, assuming you do not go to a monster turbo.

As for turbos, I think what you want is a KKK GT2871 hybrid from 034:

                or the complete kit:

                RS2'd 93 UrS4 5 spd sedan
                94 UrS4 V8 6 spd manual avant

ahh. Your right that the 968 tranny is the strongest of the line with the exception of the snail shell tranny found in the older 924 models. Swapping to the 968 requires some other parts also. If I remember correctly it uses a different axles and shifter assemblies.

That looks like a nice unit. I will have to see if the stock setup will fit in the 944's engine bay as is or if I will have to fab a manifold before I buy anything. If I have to make a manifold changing flange sizes/styles won't be a big deal.
