Oil cooler upgrades in original location.

The original oil cooler will probably be ok for my needs, but I just wondered if anyone had successfully upgraded the oil cooler, but kept it in the original(ish) location behind the right hand lower grille.
I'm sure I'd seen some pictures somewhere, but I can't seem to find any now. I know that Tom C upgraded his, with good use of an angle grinder.

I need to get a few more bits and pieces on my own car, before I can try out some of my own ideas, so I wondered what others had done.

    Can anyone help me out?

Thanks Jamo. I remember VasP took his cooling pretty seriously.
I'm trying to count the rows. Hopefully he can enlighten me on the dimensions.
That's the sort of thing I was after. I'm not sure how VasP's funky IC and pipework arrangement lends itself to that setup.

It could alter my original plans. I currently have a 13 row cooler behind the main rad, a 16 row won't fit by 4mm. It's quite a bit larger than the original 3B oil cooler, but because of where it is it obviously won't get the same amount of cool air as it would in the original location. If I can get the equivalent or larger than the 13 row there, then I think I'll use that for engine cooling.
My 3B cooler is relatively new, so it will be a shame not to use it, but I've had enough of worrying about oil temps in the past, with mere K24 power.

Damn. It looks like I'll have to get a few more bits assembled, only to measure up, then disassemble again to see what is possible on my car. I'm getting used to this. Finishing the oil cooling will have to wait for another time.

If anyone else has any ideas then please post them.

my cooler is 16 row(if i remember correctly!!), but the downside is that i had to cut away the front towbar to have it fitted. That way it fits.otherwise you will end up with a smaller one,but really in the UK, do you really need a bigger one? Unless you are ONLY in track, i would think that a smaller one would be enough.

My oil temp never goes above 90C now whatever i do.Also up todate, i never had an issue to have to tow the car from the front. I once had to and we used the rear tow. That is the only issue. Oh and the fact that it may not be able to properly fastn on a dyno i suppose

Hello friends, have you any ideas of which oil cooler can I mount under a RS2 or S2 ABY in the original position? Thanks a lot!

Thanks Vasilis. That's good to know that your 16 row cooler seems to be overkill. I'm not sure about losing the towing eye, I had the pleasure of using that once. It also comes in handy for attaching dogs, kites and so on.

If your handy with figuring out things i've allways thought a simple solution to more oil cooling would just to stack two audi stock oil coolers ontop of each other(Aby/ADU spec, not 3b). Connect the outside lines to themselves, and connect the other side to the block and connect the two oil coolers together. I didn't go that route but it's possible. I wanted more room around that side of the block so i moved my oil cooler setup.
I chose not to choose life: I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who need reasons when you've got quattro?

Am wondering about this myself right now. Since my radiator needs replacing, I have the opportunity to upgrade to the 034 heavy duty radiator (link). This would give a bit more cooling capacity (although the S2 isn't exactly short of it anyway), maybe enough to change the current oil-to-air cooler for a oil-to-water cooler. I've been looking at the Laminova range from Mocal (link).

Doing this could allow me to move the oil cooler out the way of that front wheel, and possibly either then run brake cooling from there, or a cold air feed for the engine.

Anyone tried going in this direction with the oil cooling?
Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

Oi Chef, you were with me at Autosport stop giving away trade secrets

To be honest it really depends what your going to be doing with your car.

Street driving the stock cooler will cope, it's on the track where it won't cope.

i would also add that a larger oil cooler might be better on oil cooled turbos only.
