When was the ABY engine introduced

Can anyone give me near enough an exact date when the ABY engine was introduced into the Coupe.

In 93 if I remeber corectly.

Would be the same year as in the Avant and mine is the first year Avant... 93. Not sure if its the same or all 93 ABY engined s2's but mine has alot of features from a 3b such as no projector headlights and no roof rails (previous to this year their were no S2 Avants). Correct me if im wrong anyone)

Cars fitted with it officially started rolling out the factory in October 1992... but of course a stock of engines will have been built in the months running up to that.

From an engine number I can tell what month they were 'born'.

@christophski - yours is one of the 1st S2 Avants in the UK ever IIRC - having been fettled in my gaff a long long time ago - let down only by its faded paint at the time.

But yes - earliest S2 Avants had no roof rails and the 5-spoke 3B wheels. They also sported orange indis and non-ellipsoidal lights in the earliest builds as you rightly say.

And of course 10/92 is model year 1993.

Cheers paul, the guy I brought it from said it was an early one. It now has lovelly shiny paint and Avus wheels and Clear front repeaters. I do still have the 5 spoke 3b wheels which im going to get detailed next month then put them back on the car for originality. And I have just dug out the engine code its ABT 001947, if this helps.

Annoyingly - the earliest month I have data for is March 1993 with the first ABY engines starting from low 2000 mark... how very tedious - I thought I had all the dates.

The date of first registration for my car is 01/05/93. Does this mean mine is prior to the dates you have then?

Sorry I got the wrong engine code.. it starts ABY not ABT but the numbers remain the same.

Your ECU has a sticker dating it to February 1993 and your VIN (ending 126 right ?) has it leaving the factory April 1993 so its pretty early. This was an Audi UK press car I think so must be early... Can't be many RHD S2 Avant built before that date I should imagine.

'dest' has the database - he can advise / confirm based on what cars he has sight of.

You are correct with the VIN number and I have just had a response from Dest regarding the info I have sent him with all the numbers. I didnt realise there was a feature on my car or that it was a press car. Makes it all more valuable to me, which i didnt think was possible as I have wanted one for so long and finally have one!

Yes it is a special car - amazed you didn't know that - definitely adds to its value. Before you had it, was owned by 'Gas' I think - and before that I guy I used to work with in London - thats how it wound up at my place for a few weeks for a fairly major refit.
