Leaking wastegate, could this be the problem?

Lately i have been having problem with my car. ( 93. urs4 / aan)
its been studdering on revs, and i have to accelerate slowly to not have the car jump.
felt like it was the plugs, so i bought new ones. but it was all the same again.
even when idling i could notice missfires.
so yesterday i tested the system for airleaks. no leaks in the actual system. ( From the hose from turbo-outlet.) But i tried blowing in the hose to the wastegate. and i couldnt hear anything, but i could blow straigt trough it. so i took off the hose, no leaks there.

tried a hose on the upper part of the wastegate. just to test the membran, and it was not leaking.

Unscrew the banjo, and found soot inside it.

took the hole wastegate off, and open it. to find it covered in soot. the air was leaking down the actual Valveshaft. and exhaust in to the wastegate.

The valve had a huge amount of axial play. you know what i mean, like in a bad turbo.

this i found out last night, and i havent tried another wastegate yet. so i dont know if it is the source to my problem. But i think it is, a leak this big, will make the wastegate close and the motor behave strange.

Made a sketch in paint, for those who dont understand what i am talking about.

i tried some copperpaste on the shaft to see if it would seal, but it was too much of a gap, and i reccon in time the paste will disappear. so now im looking for a new wastegate.

    Will post results asap.

Hope i could help anyone out there who have the same problem. checking the wastegate wouldnt even strike my mind.

The valve to guide is a very loose fit so it isnt air tight. I was very surprised too when i dismantled them...

Your symptoms sound more like a dead or dieing power output stage (POS) or coil. Suggest you have a look at this:

      and this re: the POSs:

Coil packs are your problem if you have miss fires in WOT.If just in idling is the POS and check the spark plugs .

Confirmed - that valve guide leaks a lot... Seems all wrong I know, but thats the way the are.

Today i tested both the POS units, swapped them with a couple that was known to work.
but the hessitating and the acceleration was the same. then we tested another coilpack. and guess what!

Yup, now it runs smoothly. so i have to get new coils.
im happy to have finaly found the problem. =)

anyway, thanks for all the help guys =)

i posted something a little while ago with similar symptoms only occuring abov 1.5bar of boost. Coilpacks and loose spark plugs are the culprit.
