    V6 Cooling System bleeding,yawn,sorry!

    Hi everyone!

    OK,cutting to the chase...

Fitted a new heater matrix hose 10 days ago.

Bled the cooling system by opening bleed screw and blowing into the expansion tank until water ran from bleed screw.

Didnt do this with heater controls on hot,nor vents open:corey:

    Ahem,yes,moving on.....

The windows soon misted up mainly.....yes ...... the front screen!

Then I bled it by using another method gained from a Forum. This was to let engine get to "fans cutting in" stage, with heater controls on and vents open. After over 20 mins the fans cut in,this thermostat is nearly new by the way.
Water was topped up as necessary. Most of the time the cap was off the expansion bottle, due to wondering if this did actually make a difference!Talk about confusion from so manyh different methods suggested!Argh!

The upshot of this is this.I drive down road,if I set the fan to hot, steam gushes out of air vents and stinks of glycol.

I did recently run the car virtually out of water,as I was stuck in midle of nowhere out in the cousin-****ing Fens!!!

It got to dead on 100 degrees for about 15 miles.

What would you guys do now?

Im guessing dash out time or sniff test..........

Poor old lass, still looking good and about to click 200k.
    Any help much appreciated

    Steve

There is a bleed screw on the water pipe that goes in the back of the head if you look at the right hand head looking into the engine bay from the front follow the steel water pipe from the head in towards the middle of the engine you will see a small allan key headed bolt half way thats the bleed screw you might have to unplug the cable's to get a better view once the tiny bit of air gets out of there you will be sorted

      .

      Ooh!

      Cheers Raj!

Will try this in the morning...

Hey if I have an air lock, would this effect performance??

You see,Im guessing that the hot running when she ran out of water has started to blow a gasket....

Iam 100% sure she has lost some of her original pull of torque, yknow all mind-warping 150 hp of it!

Not really sure that would contribute but doing heads on them cars is a doddle and timing belts the biggest pain is putting the head bolt tool in on the right bank as the abs sensor gets in the way

Sounds like its been airlocked... that bleed screw to the heater matrix is the trick - its the highest point on the system... They must be bled with cabin temp set to max.

A compression test will determine if one of the head gaskets has let go due to excessive heat - I'd doubt that 100 celsius would do so though.

Just notice the bit where you mention steam in the cabin and smell of coolant... that is more worrying surely - like a fractured heater matrix. Have you checked carpets for damp ?

I agree the top one should suffice but my V6 was a bitch untill i stumbled on the bleed screw on the steel pipe undid that never looked back
Every other 80,S2 i have done i have just undone the matrix bleed screw but for some reason did not work on the V6 (This is just my experience)

Good to hear the heads easy to do.
I did the Cambelt,Water Pump,Thermostat, and idler/tensioner last year,in -2 degrees in the winter, and wouldnt eat all day till it was done.
                Yep,thats obsession for ya!

@ S2 Central Will check that.Im sure I did notice wet soundproofing in the middle of the summer when removing an old install.I seem to remember forgetting about that damp promising to look at it soon.

A tenner says your matrix is leaking. Feel around both sides of the transmission tunnel... Fear not as dashboard removal isn't totally horrendous, but you can wipe out two days of your life if doing a matrix swap for the first time.

                    Okie dokie matey!

Im not betting though, unless I can be you for the next two days.
That way,a matrix would only cost me a tenner from GSF!

I can sense a car borrowing mission coming on!

Does this splendid establishment have pool cars???
                    Pardon the pun!!!

Pete at quattro corner for the best price on an OEM one - 45 bills, not too bad!
