Timing belt change advice

Hi guys,

I am shortly due to do the timing belt on the avant.
I have spoken to my garage and they are happy for me to take the car down, strip it down so they have access to the belt, they do the belt and then I put it back together (can't be bad can it) soooo question is do I replace the water pump, going through the recipts I have with the car there is a mention of one afetr a new head was fitted in 2002. That is it. No mention of it when teh belt was changed in 2005.

Anyhting else I should be aware of when changing the belt or should I just give the parts to the garage and let them do it all???

He did mention the water pump and to find out when it last had one.

How long are they supposed to last (water pump)??

id do.

all belts, water pump, tensioner,

check crank pulley tooth, check cam pulley tooth.

make a locking tool. ensure the garage doesn't put it in gear and hold brake whilst its cracked.

The guys at the garage are great to be honest he used to have an S2 himself so he has been superb with me, lucky bleeder just got himself an RS6 (so I did the honourable thing) and I have got him in contact with Doug at MRC and after a bit of a good service it will be winging it's way to him to have a nice upgrade to 520 BHP. that car is lovely, my only gripe is it sits on RS4 type wheels..... (tis an early 03 model though)..... Need to play m,assivley with the S2 to go for a tootle with him though he has a heavy right foot

Just do it all Aaron, you're already doing all the hard work for them by taking it all apart lol.
Beg borrow or steal the right locking tool and you're laughing.

I agree with what Gaz said above, in addition check the front crank seal while you're there

Do it all, pump, idler, and replace the crank pulley for the belt. If its an S2 motor it would be an ideal time to replace the small hose to the water manifold.

His name is Carl at Stanbridge Motors in Rugby,do tyres and everything, Audi enthusiast through and through but does not just deal with them. Really good lad to me, I take bits to him (suspension) he repair/replace the bits I want then gives me them back, really good to me and all his customers really. not as close for you in leicester though but saves me a 17 mile journey to go see mr Wizard (depending on where you are!). His RS6 is SWEEET as!!

Carl is a regular customer of mine and he is indeed am Audi nut. He has his RS6 and I think it's his brother who has a B5 RS4. I've also been pointing him towards Doug to get it remapped.

@Ben, yup he is a great lad his RS6 is awesome just looking at it make me drool, Yes his bro has an RS4 they are both going to visit Doug together after a full service overhaul on the RS6 (just to make sure it is up to scratch), Carl is def going for a 520map with the gearbox remapped too, and his brother is having the RS4 mapped as he is fed up of Carl kicking his backside in the 6.
