    Coil Pack

    Hi all

I think one of my coil packs has given up and I'm wondering if its a job I can do myself or if its a 'book it into the garage' job.

How expensive is it going to be for parts and where can I get them if its an easy job?
I've already phoned GSF and they quoted about 90 odd quid!

Also, I see there are previous threads about an upgrade to the coil packs, is this advisable?

    Cheers
    Dave

thats the options dave. uprated kit or new pack.

id say if its one pack and a standardish car just fit a new pack. wiring needs to be cut and shut. if its more andor performance go with maybe the 034 kit as it rids and output stage issues too in one go.

whereouts in town are you mate.

I personally prefer the OE coils to the aftermarket ones as they are proven to last big miles and heat cycles before any problems arise. The variants with 5 x coils on the bulkhead with long leads just look terrible, but folk have found them perfectly usable.

Your problem with replacing a single coil is -

1 - being 100% certain its just that one
2 - by changing it you dont damage any fragile wires to other coils

If one coil is indeed bad then the others aren't far behind it - so may be false economy to change just one.

Your problem might however just be the following -

      1 - A loose / bad spark plug
      2 - Damaged HT boot
      3 - Faulty POS channel

Do rule out of the above before changing coils - they are expensive boogers alright. If you do end up taking it to a garage then I can send you a schematic they should use to wire them up properly. If they follow factory info it will be wrong.

The car is standard so it sounds like OE for me if thats the problem.

How do you rule out these?

        1 - A loose / bad spark plug
        2 - Damaged HT boot
        3 - Faulty POS channel

Could you send the scematic please cause if it gets into electrical stuff, then I'm useless!
I'd love to do all the work myself but just need to be shown once, do we have any garage meets coming up?

1 - remove throttle damper, then entire coil pack and HT boots lifts out to expose the plugs. Check them. You will see signs of combustive gasses in the plug holes and around coilpack if a plug has been loose for a while.

2 - visually check all the boots. By bending them carefully you should see no cracks and splits. I replaced all mine to good effect as a few were cracked badly.

3 - you have 6 x channels on the car. Only 5 are used so by carefully moving wires on the POS connector you can temporaily use the 'spare' channel in place of all other five - one at a time to see if you can feel any improvement

Take a look at this document - pages 13-16 are of special interest.

To wire in a new coil pack you need to able to solder/splice in new wires - the OE coils don't come connectorised. That is the only real PITA with the OE coils (other than cost) as the 1.8T based coils are fitted with a nice simple connector.

If you decide to replace the whole set of coils, I have a set of these:

Discover Apikol's top-tier performance parts and expert installs for Audi, VW, Porsche, and BMW. Upgrade with OEM parts and enjoy a 12-month warranty!

Which I bought second hand from here:

I was told when I bought them that they had been used but not for long and were being sold due to lack of funds. I bought them to try and fix a miss fire which was still present with them so I put the old coil packs back on.

There are lots of posts about these on here, some swear by them others curse them.

I'm looking to cover their cost so £160 including delivery by 48 hour courier.

I had a misfire off boost and it turn out to be spark plug boot, got a set from Fat Audi 80. Worth doing anyway

Changed a coil as one of my plugs was coked up but never really noticed it while running.
Its a good idea to look at the plugs to see there all healthy.
I found a loose plug earlier this year and I think it maybe cooked the coil pack as it looked worse for wear than the other four.
There is a wee bit of info on my project thread

Nah, it's definately not a learjet in there, more like a 40 year old delapedated rust bucket!

Got the plugs out and one didn't have any carbon deposits on it.
The boots all look fine and the pos sensors all look ok too.
Is there a way of checking the coils themselves?

hi, I had same problem with my aby I too thought I had a dud coil pack but it turned out to be the pos - its very easy to eliminate and I would rule this out first as its a lot easier to change than a coil pack
