    MAF - for info

My local Bosch agent got a replacment MAF in for me after my 5 month old one went U/S.

I was somewhat surprised to find it was an exchange unit. I didn't think the MAF's were serviceable.

Exchange unit (after surcharge) came in at £120+vat.

Invoice showed same Part No as 'new' unit

Have to say the unit looked brand new to me, no way I would have known it was a recon.

They do exist as reconditioned from Bosch, I even wonder if they don't replace all the internals but the point is that they exist, they are cheaper than brand new, outright purchased items and they work just as good as a new one!

    Cheers,

As MAF is the subject I'd like to ask you Mihnea what do you think about the mod that was on the www.irry.com website. I mean the system where MAF was moved near the throttle body and is under boost pressure. Would this be possible to do without software changes? Do you think it would remove or decrease the potential MAF air flow problem?

Hi Porkkis, sorry for the late reply, had to browse a while back to your message!

I've seen that system but I can't see any advantage to it, the MAF is sucking even hotter air than before the turbo's cold side, and this means that the current intensity has to be even higher in order to keep the wire at a constant temp (usually +200 degree compared to what's going through it)...

Doing this without software changes won't really be possible, at least I don't think so, and I don't think either that it would solve a potential MAF issue, like hot wire breakage... if hot wire breakage is a problem, then stay tuned until I make available my hot film MAF kits for the S2s, then there'll be no more hot wire breakage issues, and my kits will use the latest HFM 5 Bosch hot film technology (the ones that don't have issues anymore in TDI engines FWIW).
