    All or Nothing Power

Following on from a tuner commenting on my car saying it was "all or nothing and undriveavble". It is as far as I know pretty close to a standard RS2 in power delivery.

I gave my mate a shot - first time I have knowingly let anyone else drive my car, apart from the boss. He struggled to drive it smoothly because he was not used to:

    a) The lag - flooring it at 2000rpm and not kicking until 3500rpm.

    b) The clutch - whenever he changed gear he was jerking it

    c) The fright - when it does come on, he didn't use all the rpm so was very jerky.

I have to say the girlfriend goes up in my estimation in driving, as she can drive it fast and smooth. I not knowingly drive around all these - and the tuner should know how to drive.

Finally, my mate commented on how easy and relaxing it is to drive when it's below 3500rpm - like a standard car - he's used to a 215bhp Mk3 1.8T that is very, very sensitive to throttle position and manic to drive.

It would be interesting for a S2(standard) driver to see what they think this weekend.

    Sorry for the ramble.

No need to appologise Doug, I would be more than happy to help you by thrashing the living daylights out of her!

If you so desire, you may also see how horrible a lower 280 hp feels by driving mine!

If I get that ARB this week you can have a shot

Would be nice to know how heavy my clutch is and how notchy the gearbox is compared to others.

doug, i have 380 bhp and i must admit that when i first got the car i had difficulty in driving it smoothly, because of the reasons you have pointed out. like you say when the warp factor comes in it's frightening. :eek2: :eek2: :eek2: . so it took me a few weeks to get used to it. the 250 bhp bbr turbo bmw i had previously was much easier to drive hard. in the dry that is ...lol. i agree a tuner should be able to jump in anything and know what to expect. maybe after a few drives with it he would have got used to the power delivery etc. funny but the wife only takes mine up to 3000 rpm when she drives it, scares her shitless above that!!!anyway i wouldn't worry too much as long as your happy with it thats all that matters mate..

Don't want to upset the forum but.....
Thanks to the selling of some of my spares, I'm in the process of building a custom ...."device" (we'll call it that way, for the moment ) that if I can manage to make work the way I want, together with a good chipping (Mihnea) could really make devastating improvements in the bottom range of rpm. Thus allowing monster turbos to be happily run .
If the "thing" works I'll then share all the results and eventual technical assistance with our "community".
At the moment I'm waiting to get this ...device...from the "States"

              You teaser!!!!

I know what it is... the device you ordered is a super charger!!!! that way the blower will provide the grunt from 1000 rpm to 3000 rpm when the turbo takes over!!!

                Yeah, of course it is

Will just let you wonder a while how the hell is possible to fit a blower in our engine bay and make the damned thing to work nicely in conjunctuion with the turbo

P.S. Given I'll get the item over here (I won a eBay bidding, but the U.S. seller does not answer my posts yet ), then it will of course take a fairly long time to do the job since my free time is pretty small at the moment .

There was a post somewhile ago on one of the boards I've been ,about fitting super charger to 5cyl engine.

And it looked like this :

You take Lysholm kompressor(supercharger) . It was produced for Mazda Millenia 2.3L. "I suppose you could get a 20vt intake manifold and clear some space where the regular intake was, but then you'd have to pull a belt over there. Plumbing issues are the same as with Turbo, as are fueling, and you save the hassle of dealing with the exhaust side. " his comments.

                    Ok, Sweeper.
But I don't mean to get rid of the turbo

I want them both to work in my engine bay

                      Uh... and another thing:

not even a very efficent supercharger like the twin screws Lisholm type can handle over 1-1.2 bar boost.
So you'll never beat turbo's top performances.

Your 'device' wouldn't be using a 'electro mechanical' approach would it?

Hm. Do you believe it's possible to install both turbo and supercharger ???? What about ignition system and ECU ?

Interesting thing . Maybe it's better to install biturbo ? One small and fast turbo for low-end and one huge for top-end.

Anyone it will be the first project i hear about that use both systems .

                          Wish you luck.

Lancia did this with their Delta S4, used a Roots blower and a KKK K26 turbo. So it can be done, look forward to hearing how you get on mate .

                            Cheers,

IF both can be made to fit mechanically - which I reckon is no easy task - then appropriate mods to the ECU software could be made for the supercharger as long as the boost control on the supercharger is done mechanically/pneumatically.

If that wasn't possible, then an aftermarket boost controller could be added to look after the boost profile of the supercharger. This would probably need inputs for RPM and IAT as a minimum and probably have a separate MAP sensor to keep track of manifold pressures.

Some careful thought into how the combined boost profile for the blower and turbo would be merged is required to have lots of nice useful boost from idle to create a wider and flatter torque output than the turbo alone would permit. Maximum boost at maximum revs would need to be kept within safe levels of course.

Darn interesting project idea... I shall include it with my wish list for the 2.5l conversion that is in the early planning phase. All cash contributions gratefully received
