    Thoughts on my ideal setup

Hi guys, just thinking a bit for the future, assuming I can get the standard car into a reliable state. Not sure if the kind of thing I'm after is possible, so I thought I'd ask.

I'm not into really thrashing the pants off the car, but I want a healthy chunk of everyday usable power. What I'm after is boost kicking in as early as possible and holding to 5-6k. I never push it over 5.5k anyway, so I'm happy to sacrifice top end power in exchange for a bit of a kick a bit lower down. The car is mainly used in town with the odd country road blat.

I don't fancy ripping the engine apart so need to keep standard internals. I understand this is going to limit the maximum power I get and that's ok with me.

So, what sort of set up will I need to get this kind of power delivery? I'm guessing it's a case of turbo, manifold, injectors, mapping. But which turbo?

    Thoughts?

RS2 set up with either RS2 turbo/MTM/Nothelle small K26 hybrid or Garret GT28 would both probably suit your needs, bare in mind it's torque that kills the rods and the RS2 turbo is a torque monster so would need careful mapping for optimal power/torque balance.

I'm after very similar goals to what you outline above, only I have the luxury of starting off with a Nothelle set up. You'll want a 3" down pipe and decent exhaust system whatever set-up you go for.

Yep i would advise the RS2 setup to
3'' Longlife Exhaust, Koni Adjustables, H&R Springs, Full RS2 Setup with Mr Nugents RS2 Chips (just need the RS2 Airbox)

If you don't go over 5k5 then stock turbo or small hybrid is OK, peak power is higher than that on a stock engine, red line is 7k4 so keep your foot in longer you can get a stock turbo to hold on to 7k... just No point having more lag if you're not going to use the extra top end power IMO.

I quite agree, these engines are designed to rev.

The problem is, whilst the engines are designed to rev, I'm not designed that way! Ideally I'd want to narrow the powerband a bit. More power mid range with standard or less lag would be awesome. By the sounds of it, this doesn't seem possible. I rather not plough my cash into top end power that I'm unlikely to ever use.

My understanding of rs2 spec is that it's got more power generally across the rev range but more lag.

Has anyone got dyno plots a various setups so I can compare?

personally i disagree. these are not designed to rev. the stock turbo dies around 5500. may feel like it holds on but driving a bigger unit will soon prove this otherwise as do torque graphs.

look to install rods if yoy want umph low down. torque spikes are expected more pushing a smaller unit to higher boost levels. personally over 350 be it hp or lbsft id change the rods.

finally turbos are a compromise. a bigger one gives more but lag is the trade off.

Sounds like a perfect candidate for the RS2 setup (RS2 turbo, EM, injectors and probably IM and airbox), a fairly bolt-on and torquey setup that can safely be run on stock internals if mapped correctly - lots of people have gone this way.

+1 for the RS2 setup boosting 1´8bar max i think that will be reliable for stock internals.

Mid range power , go for the ADU camshasft inside ,with an adjustable Pulley

Doing just the turbo is not the right way for you IMO.

Get a reverse manifold installed first with a 3" downpipe and exhaust system. You'd be surprised how much more responsive the car will be on even a K24 with just these mods when running a homefry.

Once you have the infrastructure done. Then look at the Wagner Evo manifold and then consider either an RS2, 2871r, 3071 or CT355 turbo.

RS2 turbo will be the easiest to install the others will need custom work

                          im with jamo.
cost wise better products than rs2 are available for similar or cheaper money

id go with the wagner exhaust and maybe keep the standard inlet dependent on budget.

you may find the the disco potato 28rs is good for you. or even somethnig like a t3/t04e with a 0.48 hotside and a 50 or 57 trim cold

Single mass flywheel improves the stock setup no end too, gives a further 500 rpm and snappier response. Repo offers a custom turbo service, he might have something that's perfect for you.

                              Disco potato?

Do any of these setups have similar lag to stock? I don't want to have to plan all my accerelation long in advance

If I restrict the torque to just below rod-bending levels, what else needs replacing to handle the extra grunt? I assume the clutch. What about the diff, the prop etc?
