You can use dwells up to 5ms continuously with HO coils. Just beware that the vems software saying 5ms does not actually mean it really is 5ms, and with 6ish ms continuosly will cause the coil to overheat, especially on higher speeds where the revs are up.
To check this You should have a GOOD scope in the outputs and check the various load levels and revs to see how the dwell time actually lives. Usually the number is more accurate on higher revs than on low. Explanation to this is a bit complicated, and a bit over my head, but new generation 16 and 32 bit ecus have internal clocks, whereas oldskool 8 bit ones don't, so they need to calculate the time from rpm signals.
Actually the spark energy with the 034 HO coils rises all the way up to 9 ms, but I would't use that high as it most likely will overheat the system in no time.
2.5-3ms is ok with 1.8T units.
e: to answer the question, what is Your plug gap? IK27's have like 0,9mm originally, some sets have had 1.1mm, which is really too much, especially for 1.8T/original coils on high torque setups.Everything less than 2 bar is considered to be naturally aspiratedComment

thanks repo. i got ik24. gonna fit some standard plugs later too. i had some bk7re in before the gap looks bigger on the bk7re to the ik24. i like to test things. see how they fair.
ill go with a slightly higher dwell then change the plugs tonight and hope for the best.

I run the 034MS HO coils, IK27 and VEMS. My dwell settings are:
3.07ms @14V
2.00ms @6V
No problems with 2.1-2.2 bar boostComment

The stock F5DPOR has 0.6mm gap, and you can't adjust the gap on those.
I'm running the colder F3CS plugs that are 0.6mm out of the box, but I need to gap them to 0.5mm in order to prevent misfires. That is at 2.1 bar peak boost with stock coils (93K miles). E85 is harder to ignite too, since AFR is much richer.1995 RS2 on Alcohol (6.8sec 100-200km/h)
