Urgent - Engine died and wont start

    Guys,

Was on the way to bedford audi this morning to pickup a reverse light switch and the engine suddenly lossed power and died, simultaneously the 30 mile fuel warning light came on.

I thought I had run out of petrol so got a can full of petrol in but it still wouldnt start.

When you crank over it appears to start for about 1/2 second then die.

I was planning to start by checking the fuel pump and pulling fault codes which I am about to do now, but i need to get the car working asap.

Any advice would be very welcome

    thanks
    Greg

Its an ABY, will check the relay etc first and see if I can get it to work. Its the two hall sensors on the bell housing for the flywheel too isnt it?

one is a speed sensor other is crank pick up, start with fuel then take a plug out rest it on rocker cover and check for a spark DO NOT TOUCH IT WHEN CHECKING!!!!!!!! it hurts so much!! ive never been same since hair always sticking up now

It wouldn't start if it was the sensors IIRC as you wouldn't get spark as all 3 sensors have to be in the same window by the ecu.

The other issue could be fuel pump, you have a 044 do you not? deffo try bridging the relay and see if the pump activates

ABY doesn't use that type of rotary hall sensor, it takes its reading from the cam pulley.

Rocco, Do you mean the two sensors on the bell housing?

Well an update so far. The fuel pump is def running, I have taken the cover off over the tank and you can hear it. It runs when cranking then dies when you stop turning the key.

Next job is checking the voltage to the pump during and after the ignition key is released.

How do you go about briding the fuel pump relay?

On my brothers s4 his wouldnt start and i remember a thread about pooring water behind the cam wheel to mess the cam sensor up. I did this and hey bingo it worked, strange but true.
