cooling fan now pi$$ing me off!!!

After a morning of getting covered in other peoples oil i thought i would fit the new blue fan resistor pack thing and stop the 'turbo' speed only fan..... yeah right!
well according to the test procedure i discovered the resistance between the posts was to high so condemed the part. new one on and still no slower fan speeds.
when i bridge the plug off the sensor points 1&3 i get 'turbo' fan
but bridging 2&3 still nothing at all
can someone please advise as i hate electrics and usually avoid them at all costs or make one of the staff do it insted!

Could be the switch thats at fault.Although i had the same problem as you, and it was the resistor pack.

I have a vague memory of mucking around with this on my last S2 - Is there not a couple of relays and fuses to check as well?

Yes theres two or three relays involved here and its tied up with the A/C wiring as well. I don't have schematics to hand so I'm a bit fooked to comment anymore on the subject, except to suggest you double check that the switches are indeed working and wired as they should be.

Does the car have A/C ?

no a/c on the shed! i will have a dig round for the relays. what switches and where? as i have pulled the plug off the sender at bottom left of the main rad to try and bridge to get the fan spinning. surly the fan should come on speed 2 when i bridge pins 2 & 3?
i have a live feed on pin 3 and im assuming 1&2 are neg.?
are the relays for the different speeds or just for the overall supply to the fan?

hair is being pulled out now!

I need the schematics to steer you round the thing, but I have a nasty feeling, this area is one of those not well covered in the two binders of schematics that I have. My feeling is its in one of the three other schematic binders that I don't have (yet) but Erwin is now complaining some of this documentation is NLA. you can say that again! my local audi dealer gives me next to no discount even though im buying parts on almost a daily basis!

i have found 2 relays for rad fan so will have a poke around bridging this and that to see if i can get the lower speed to spin up at all.
if i can't get it working by castle combe then i will be the bloke wondering round in a pi$$ and kicking my car!

There was something on the 20V.org site about fan wiring connecters burning out. Some of the USA CQ20v had this problem. Maybe they could help?

well it would appear whoever had the car before me didn't like the fuse box or relays as they seemed to all be mixed up.
i now have turbo speed and one slightly slower then that.!
is that right for a aby with no a/c or should there be an even slower 3rd speed?

My cooling fan works on turbo speed only, unless i put the aircon on, then it runs at a low speed all the time (for the aircon rad)

Also just turns off with the engine which i thought was weird too as other cars ive had always keep it running after the engine is switched off for a minute or two.

Should it keep on running or stop as it does?

mine use to keep running or it would switch on by its self after but now like yours it just stops.
but at least i have 2 speeds now so im slightly happier....for now

It is supposed to carry on running, but most peoples stop when the engine is turned off mine included.

Mine turns off too. I'm going to do a bit more digging now I've got the after run pump working again. There are (upto) four relays depending on the setup in the car.

One for the after run pump/fan stage 1 and one for each of the fan stages.

My fan would stop if I stopped the engine - but it would occasioanlly come on later. Does it not use 2 different temp sensors to operate the fan - one when stopped the other while running? I have done the mod in the water manifold temp sensor - so it always comes on after I stop the car - but I expect there is another sensor still connected that operates the fan when the car is running??
