humm.. my bros old type 85 GT use to make a smiler noise when it had warmed up.. , but it also has a loud high pitched wheezing /possibly slight grinding sound.you could hear him coming up the road. We never did work out what it was. car ran fine tho, other than the odd noises.

I'm surprised no one else has commented here.

I wouldn't like to say if your car is ok or not. best thing to do is double check everything is as it should be, perhaps turn the engine over by hand with the rocker/cam cover off? to see if there is anything obviously strange going on under there., also make sure the cam belt hasn't jumped a tooth or anything like that. (this happened to my friends escort after he had some cams fitted, made it run like ****, till someone took a look and realized one of the cams was out)

Perhaps someone more versed in the ways of the 20vt can post up some better advice..

It does sound like noisy lifters, i've seen high mileage engines do that after sitting for a few weeks. You can start the engine and let it idle forever and the noise wont go away, but drive it for a few miles revving to 3-4000rpms will cure it. In other words they need prolonged exposure to high oil pressure before they fully bleed.

Also try disconnecting the PAS pump belt, the pumps can make a very similar noise when worn.

yes, lifters it maybe also.. I think theres a way to fill them with oil before fitting?. did you do this? if not it might well be the noise you're hearing. but it should go away eventually with a bit of use.

Another possibility might be a rattle from the clutch release baring maybe? If you put your foot on the clutch pedal while the engine is ticking over, does the noise go away?

I have this problem on my car, and when i first start it I can't hear it, but after about a minute or two, i can hear a rattle.

i have heard this before loads of times but on a 996 porsche engine when the bore has picked up on the piston, see if you can borrow a bora scope off someone to inspect the bores

sounds just like tappets but its not, http://www.fleetequipmentmag.com/Con...0000026237.jpg
