Volvo I5 instead of Audi I5

sacrilege i know , but was wondering if 850 T5 engine would fit in an s2?

    i.e. engine mounts, bellhousing etc.???

reason being that the later 850's and s70's used d5252t audi derived TD engine which i think was an alloy block

also think all of the pertrol engined t5's were alloy block

just thinking along the lines of reducing weight infront of the front axle

Im not sure it will fit with engine mounts, in the ovlov they are transverse and have a top engine mount as well at the back. Ive heard they can fit VAG gearboxes, but think you would need some fabricaition to fit the engine.
But dont hold me to this I'll check with my little bro, been a whle since I've been in a T-5's engine bay.

It would be very interesting if there was an alloy 5 cylinder block available from Volvo that fitted. I am pretty sure the ones used in the Focus ST and RS are cast iron blocks?

SORRY.it was wrong; the DIESEL engine in volvo 2,5liter 5pot,are the same as audi a6 one, the petrol engine havent i tested for the fitment to the bellhousing..the petrol 5pot volvo,; its comment that the sylinder does not take so mutch stress like the audi engine

i am still intrigued whether this can be done

have found a quote from a thread on 'motorgeek':-

"One crazy man here in sweden threw in a Volvo R I5 engine to an Coupe Quattro"

i have done a few searches on line for "quattro b5234t" etc etc to try and throw up a thread on that particular build but i am still none the wiser

i wonder if any of the swedes (or other skandinavians on here) can remember seeing such a build thread?

if so any chance of a link to this build thread/ any info?

TBH, I don't think the weight saving will be that huge to make it worht the hassle. For the cost of the engine build and convertion you could get carbon fibre wings and bonnet to match the weight saving from the alloy block and have the stronger audi engine (IMHO)

But experimentation is good and hats off to anyone who tries something new

That green s2 coupe is from sweden, or am I mistaking? That has a volvo I5 engine. There are some pics on it somewhere.

are there any benefits from using the volvo? they're cheaper i would imagine as they're not in great demand but can they be easily tuned, cheaper to tune or are they more reliable? or is it a case of just trying something different??

I was under the impression that the old Volvo 2.3 as seen in 850R/V70 was a cast ion block, and the current 2.5 as seen in the focus ST is all alloy.

As such the older engine is generally reckoned to be much stronger and more tuneable, and does not share much in common with the later 2.5 (in volvos this engine saw service in the S40 etc. I run a focus ST as my daily drive and from what others have said it seems that much above 380 BHP and the engine is just not tough enough.

I think the audi inline 5 is superior in most respects to be honest, even including fuel consumption, I'm lucky I get 23.5 MPG out of the focus. Its tougher and more tunable.

all i am thinking about is weight and how to get rid of it, especially from front of car

standard 220 hp is enough for me

as such interested in alloy blocks

                            just thoughts really

is alloy block really any weaker? for grey cast iron has very low tensile strength

as for volvo engine im lead believe its abit longer and taller which bout be issue for a b2/3/4 chassis
