    Andy,
    You have seen this right?

Audi effectively did a similiar thing on the 20V RR UR as the majority of the airbox (the intake side) sat outside the engine bay in the wheel well.

Cheers for that Robin, now you mention it, I remember reading that a week or two ago. As I've said above, it would be nice not to cut the inner wing to bits as would be required for something like this. That said, if people want a better functioning intake then I think that is really the best you'll get for shielding etc. Perhaps a future project when I stop worrying about making more permanent mods

Just bought that 4" port and off to Q&B to get some 4" ducting.

        Bonus

My guess that a 4" pipe would squeeze down the gap was spot on, I've managed to fit some lovely ally ducting from the grille all the way to the base of the airbox, if I could be bothered to remove the 'box then I'd have done better still. When it's warmer and I've got the bass port I ordered, I'll do a better job of it, this is the alpha test unit

With a larger turbo you could forget that route but then with a reverse inlet you'll have bags of room anyway, 3" would be neater and easier (I had to remove the XM to engine hose to fit it in) but the advantage of the 4" stuff is it holds itself in with all the bends and creases where stuff is touching it. The ducting is bent and deformed in places but hey, it's still a large path for lots of lovely cold air to zip along Only downside is that the S2 badge is in the wrong place so I'll have to move it to the incorrect side

Cost of cold air feed was £4.50 for the port, £5.25 for 3m of 100mm ducting at Q&B and a few cable ties. Oh, and 1 tea bag, 50nl of milk and a tsp of sugar

already done similar ducting with the bottom right bumper vent. works very well.

Certainly does work well, even with 'only' Esso Supreme in there rather than the Tesco 99 the car was pulling like a train, felt really good, a worthwhile £15 upgrade. No just the heat shields to sort before trying to get the cone filter to work as well as the 'box

I took these when I put the 4" port in, as you can see, it makes quite a difference!

Worthwhile upgrade there, the 2.5" inlet is fine for noise but opening out the airbox does well for performance, espeically chipped upwards. The 4" port on mine is to finish off the front of the cold air feed but it works well like that too, cheap mods with what feel like good results. I had a really nice bell mouth port, a stinger one I think, would work a treat but cost quite a bit new.

The front of my airbox is non-existent, cold side is pretty swiss-cheesed too, makes one heck of a growl if nothing else, less hissy than a cone filter, sounds more like an NA car. I like it

Just got my 80mm ASH hose and joiner through, bloomin good VFM. Interestingly the 80mm item has much longer legs and a larger bend radius so that will help with fitting and also accomodating a massive filter

When I purchased my inlet pipe and joiner I got a catralogue from Auto Silicone Hoses and they ahve loads of pipework at pretty good prices for those on a budget, also there's a carbon airbox in there that looks very interesting as it's <£100.

I'd suggest that the filter wouldn't be up to much but you could of course fit a filter of your choice, like one of the Apexi ones mentioned earlier, and thus get a rather nice carbon airbox setup for quite cheap money, < £150 as compared to the £200 for a BMC. Obviously this is a generic setup and so will require a few brackets making to fit neatly. Just a thought.

Some GPS testing yesterday confirmed my feeling that the cold air feed has made a difference, I reduced my 30-60 time from an average 3.00s to 2.82s, this is in slightly cooler weather but still that is a significant change. Well worth the effort, I'll be re-doing it soon with an additional heat shield and improved air guides if possible. The car feels more responsive at all times, well worth the £5 down Q&B

Right, I've made up a prototype heat shield out of 1.6mm aluminium sheet, it was really simple to make using a jigsaw with a hacksaw blade, a hole saw and a drill, finished quality is pretty good TBH too. I'll be fitting it soon enough, the aim is to further reduce engine bay temps and also shield the airbox further. Just got to look at the section in front of the turbo and see what I can achieve there, if anything, for use with a cone filter.

The cold air feed has been a really good addition to the car, if you're considering doing it then take the plunge, the car is smoother and stronger at all times 4" pipe is £5.50 @ Q&B and it took about an hour to fit, secure and mould the hose to fit inbetween the pipes, brackets etc.

Update on this. I've fitted the heat shield! It fits pretty well, just needed to be bent a few times to get the shape right. I've just taken the car for a spin with the cone filter on and it felt lively, none of the hesitation I felt before without the heat shield and cold air feed, seems that it's all working well Also done the net of the larger heat shield for a cone filter that'll give a secondary layer of insulation.

With the car sat at idle for a minute or two the cone filter was warm to the touch but not untouchable (as it has been in the past). The radiant heat under the bonnet was also greatly reduced (all obvious things but just to say that it does the job it's meant to do!).

Will be fitting the modified airbox (see pics) back on, as it makes a much better noise than the cone filter does

Watch this space for the last shield and the install completed (just because I can, not because I actually want the cone on there )

Right, reset the ECU this morning and went for a drive with the cone filter on and the new heat shield and 4" cold air feed installed, it might just be that it's a few degrees cooler today but there was it felt really strong, up there with the airbox I think that with the final heat shield installed it would actually be about the same. That said, I'll be refitting the airbox and retaining the extra heat shield and cold air feed so it should be very good indeed for a stock position airbox. The 'box certainly sounds a lot better than the noisey cone, it growls with the 'box on rather than the hiss.
