    Engine building advice,,,

    Hello All

    I was wondering if anyone could tell me what size the bores should be if i have

    JE I think with the code 81 m is it the size..Pistons ( picture below.
    )
    Also took my head of as the car started blowing blue smoke to find three Valve stem oil seals blown of the guides.. Causing the smoke Im sure its becasue the guides that have been fitted are not the same as orignal causing them not to be a tight fit.. (think i might glue these on) to solve this problem

    anyway any advice will be greatly taken ...

    The only thing that annoys me is it was running fine untill it started smoking.. Booo...

    Thank you...

    81M on the piston isn't the piston size but the material

    There will be a white sticker on the size with the bore size, see below for an example

      Just seems to be a big gap between pistons and bores..

        er - i wouldnt do this
        if i was you i would take it to a machinist who can measure it and tell you the size oif the pistons required :mischeif:

          What is the play in the valve guides like? are the valves worn- unusual for stem oil seals to bloww off unless they hadn't been fitted right in the first place or you have excessive wear in the guide/valve.

            Errr NO... if in any doubt, strip it and measure it... Check with JE what clearance they recommend and also check what gap in the piston rings. Do this for each piston.

            While you are it you should clearance all the bottom bearings too... Should only cost you time, but without doing that you will be completely in the dark.

              .

              I can measure your pistons, mains and big ends if needed.

              Got most gauges and 'slips' to check calibration is still good.

                  JE guide for piston clearance is wrong if you used their calculator you'd end up with 0.06 clearance, slap city.

                  Use 0.035 to 0.04 thou

                    you mean .0035 to .004 right? 3 thousandths is .003

                    my JE's were done such;

                    TOLERANCES ON THE RING GAP's

                    1st Compression Ring - 0.020"

                    2nd Compression Ring - 0.022"

                    3rd Oil Ring - 0.015" min (usually whatever comes from JE is more than this so you are fine in this department).

                    Piston Ring Side Clearance - 0.003"

                    Piston to Cylinder wall Clearance - 0.004"

                    TOLERANCE ON BEARINGS:

                    Crankshaft: 0.003”

                    Connecting Rods: 0.003”

                    FWIW.

                            firstly you need to do it the opposite way.

                            measure the piston and have the bore done to the tolerence stated. each bore will be slightly different due to different size pistons. you need to ensure the correct piston is in the correct bore.

                            a machine shop should be able to ensure they are in the correct hole.

                            maybe best to get the head checked over again and new sweals fitted.
