You better be sitting down when you get a quote for new coils! I cant help but think you are going about this in an expensive manor. Have you cleaned the maf connector yet? The coils would be the last thing to replace on my list of things to try!

i have never had VIOLENT judder from a coilpack. The most violent judder you get is from a boost cut due to overboost protection or something other. My bet is that it is something related to that. Coils produce misfires and the car keeps going,but they are not violent.Comment

Violent behaviour is fuel pump shutdown caused by ecu crying overboost protection. Root cause will be an air leak or faulty MAF.
Easier to say air leak than to find them sometimes but a logical approach, some basic equipment and a little time is all required to find them.
The other thing to remember is that you have to clear the ecu memory after getting this fault. So pull the ecu fuses or big plug for aminute to reset it.

Thanks Guys...

Plan of action tomorrow is to do a Vagcom reading...
Reset the ECU...
Clean MAF contacts..
Check for leaks...
One question I have; is how do you check the smaller pipes for leaks?
I have Andy-P's test kit for the big hoses...but this don't do the smaller ones!!

All the rubber ones have been replaced with OEM rubber hose which cost a small fortune and you can only buy 4 meters...Comment

You should have gone to GSF, the OEM spec vacuuum hose is £3/m.
To test the vac hoses I use one of these

Remove the idle control vavle to get to the 3 connectors on the back of the inlet manifold. Take each hose off and push the blow gun into the end. Set the regulator on the compressor to about 1bar and pressurise the line. Then listen carefully for leaks, you'll need someone inside the car to listen for leaks in the ECU and difflock lines.sigpic

Update;
Managed to get home an hour early... So had some time to play with my Lady!!
Did a Vagcom reading and it through up Error 0544; Maximum charge air pressure exceeded - Incorrect signal
Thanks To S2 Central;
Reset the error...
Cleaned the MAF and sprayed on some WD40...
Took out all the fuses as I wasn't too sure which was the one for the ECU...
Then took her for a test run....
She pulled like a train and goes like stink!!!!
We have a road near us which is a 3 mile straight and had her flat out and no sign of any issues... Tried her both at full pelt all the way through the gears and also tried her from slower speeds with my foot flat to the floor...
No problems we evident...
I'm off to Hull tomorrow so will give her a really good run and see what happens...
Lets hope it was just a one off....
Thanks again to all who have given me great advise!!!

Where would I be without this forum!!! Down the stealers getting ripped off I guess!!
So Many Thanks Again!!!

Funny, I had the exact same problem on Thursday - first time I'd taken the Avant out of the garage in 2 weeks, and first time about 3 weeks I'd actually had chance to put my foot to the floor for more than a few seconds. It was fine below 1bar boost, but as soon as I let the needle get above that it felt like I'd hit the redline. Violent, sudden juddering.
Perhaps it was something to do with the weather? Because Friday I took the car out and it pulled like a train, 1.3bar no problem. I was going to say, perhaps it was damp if you'd not driven the car for 10 days but looks like you found the problem - and I may want to clean my MAF, check for leaks and reset codes, then go out for another test-drive to be sure...AUDI - saving Dad's from minivans since 1994

Assuming mine gets running again tomorrow the front bumper needs to come off anyway so I thin I'll take the time to go and double check all hoses. Thinking the ignition amp was a red herring now.
Glad its sorted thoughComment
