fan only runs with ignition on..this right?

Just a quickie, been like this as long as i can remember but the engine fan does only run with the key in and the ignition on (without the car running). Could this be interupted by the immobiliser

I am guessing this is not correct as if the fan is running and I take the key out it will not restart again.

Any ideas what to look at first? Afterun pump works as I can feel it vibrate slightly and also is pulsed when turning the car on.

    Cheers,

    David

So if the fan was running with the electrics on and then i remove the key and it stops, wouldn't you expect it to start running again?

I'd have thought it would/should do because the temp would have been high enough to start the fan with the electrics on but if it ran for say 2 seconds and then i pulled the key out the temp wouldnt have dropped enough to not want to restart it...plus the fan cycle is like 20 seconds....if i flick the key again it would come back on.

Mine too. Key out and the fan turns off. I've often wondered if this was right

It uses a different temp sensor for when the ignition is off - probably different temps.

I used to get the same as you David - it only came on(with ignition off) after a really good thrash.

If you short out the 2 wires that go to the 2 pin temp sensor on your water manifold(mark mod) the fan (and after run pump) should come on for approx 8 minutes after you switch the ignition off.

no, i have never heard my fan come on after taking the keys out...ever, even after a run in near 100 degree heat through the German Black Forest en route to the French GP a few years back

                    I'll try the test Doug...cheers!

I tried the fuse trick on the temp sender. Works great, however, my battery went flat after two weeks I think it was due to the number of short journeys I was making in the car.

My fan allways runs when i take the key out of my 7A. Sensor on the radiator seems to control the fan when sitting in traffic, sensor clipped onto the rocker cover is for the run-on fan after you lock the car and walk away. I would assume turbos have this too as they even have a second electric water pump that runs when parked

I've walked away from my car and heard the fan come on. Normally after going through heavy traffic to find a parking space. It doesn't happen very often, but it does happen.
