    TDI block?

I've just been given a Volvo 2.5 TDI block from an 850 TDI, which is the same as the 2.5 litre VAG tdi block.

I also have a complete AAN 20v engine in my shed.

Before stripping the AAN down, can anyone tell me if the 2.5 block will bolt straight on? (I've googled it but to no avail)

I know I'll need different rods and pistons, but that was my intention with the AAN anyway.

Is anything else required, or can I just use the TDI block and crank, new rods and pistons to suit, and the AAN head?

What timing gear do I need? AAN or do I need to find a complete 5 cyl TDI engine to use the bits from that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They are similar but not the same block. The volvo block is not as strong and is akin to some of the 2.4 variants

For a stroker you really want an AAT or AET block ideally. ( some have used other codes but these two are the strongest )

search the forum for stroker plenty of project threads showing what's needed

Ah OK, so in this case, I'd be better sticking with the AAN and building that up as it is, not bothering with the Volvo block?

I was only going to do it as it wasn't going to cost any extra, but if it's not as strong, I'll leave it.

          Cheers.

It depends. I have an AEL block, which is the same as AAT block and it has both markings: AEL & D5252T. So same block. I'm not a Volvo-expert though, they may have used some another block too.

              @ Crossfire & Rob

This is what I mean http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthr...t=27206&page=5

The other Diesel blocks aren't as strong

I know over on motorgeek and there is a thread on here the 850 block has been used and installed. It really depends on what your power aims are as it's a lot of hassle for a sub 450 bhp build.

What has that to do with Volvo blocks?

After what I have been told, this is not uncommon on 2.4 AAB engine block, because it it alot weaker then the TDI block . I should have used the 2.5 TDI block...
So he used 2.4 naturally aspirated diesel block. Certainly different than 2.5TDI, be it Volvo or VAG.

You mean this? Well I have to disagree. My block states AEL = D5252T. The engine has come off an A6q.

Is it not worth it for the extra torque and displacement which should speed up turbo spool?

As said depends on your bhp level your aiming for for example a stock engine on 2.2 with a 2871 is good for 400 bhp and less or equal lag to a stock K24 turbo

Stroker isn't a simple bolt build in that there are a lot of hidden things that don't quite fit or need modding or need addressing but it is worth it if your looking for low and mid grunt.

                          ITS NOT WORTH IT ROB.

sorry big letters. 450 hp is easily achievable without hence the comment. spool differences are not that big and turbo technology has come on a lot.

for a BIG turbo a non stroker is best as itll rev out more theoretically.

id hazard a guess at 450-550 hp and good torque is strokers best area.

see standard block with rods will do the 450's. around the 500+ mark pistons realy come into it. then stroker becomes more viable.

im at about 500 at the moment. scat rods skimmed pistons stokc head.

I'm looking to use the car for track and drag use, so it will need a decent punch mid range and a good bit top end too.

im on the lookout for a stroker block. would like to aim at 600-650 with good torque and a super efficient turbo.

                              wider powerband.
