ABY homefry intercooling on ur quattro - is this adequate?

I am putting a homefry (max 280/430) ABY into the ur-quattro and am wondering if my planned intercooler will be adequate. I have sourced a deep core (4”) SMIC which has the same volume as the stock S2 ABY item (which I cannot use at the front) but obviously has a smaller front facing cross section.

First question I guess is whether or not the stock ABY intercooler front mounted in an S2 is well fit for the extra charge cooling required in the homefry mod?

The intercooler I have sourced will probably have less lag and lower pressure loss than the stock item but will also have less cooling I suspect on a/c of lower transit time. Running up to 280bhp must surely be taking the stock K24 turbo to the edge of its efficiency range (certainly seems that way looking at the compressor map) and since I am considering keeping stock EM then I am worried about heat soak into charge air that may not be getting as well cooled with my planned intercooler as it would with the stock item.

I am hoping there is some scope in the stock item (i.e. a little over-engineering) as for instance the stock RS2 intercooler is only 15% larger in volume than the ABY intercooler for over 1/3 more bhp?

Any opinions? I could, if needs be, ditch the aux-radiator and put a charge cooler in there as well as the SMIC intercooler but I guess I am looking for someone to convince me what I have is adequate and I won’t need to do this!

Look at DJ Jones project thread. He has pics of his twin IC solution for the UrQ

      Yes Bram

I have spoke to Darren many times on his car and am borrowing several of his ideas! Mighty impressive to say the least. However Darren is running 450bhp whereas I am aiming at 280bhp and thus want to gather some opinion on whether my proposed intercooling setup is adequate. Thanks for your response.

Wouldn't mind seeing Darren's in action mind you - it must be seriously quick!

The better the IC no matter the bhp the lower the charge temp. On a homefry S2 it is noticeable the difference when running an RS2 IC over Stock.

I would suggest doing the twin smaller IC on the UR from the off. 4" IC unless the core is well designed ( like Wagners ) are not good to use as there is optimum in IC thickness and cooling efficiency as the air has heated up and therefore cannot cool charge at the deepest point of the IC / getting sufficient airflow through the IC at that thinkness.

I still have the 10 valve one on mine, running more power than 280.
          Not had any problems.

Its pain getting a bigger one in and looking oe...

Kept my Cq looking standard from the outside by fitting a water to air charge cooler, capable of handling 600bhp, works well..

plenty of food for thought there for sure.

@GT500: are you running stock turbo? Also you may be interested in the intercooler I bought. It is a side mount from a Toyota MR2. Core dimensions 10x7.75x4 inches (only paid GBP60 for it new), significantly bigger volume than the WR intercooler (almost twice) but if you are running the ABY with no aircon in the WR engine bay then there will be plenty of room in there for this upgrade and still look completely stock. Just need to fabricate new mounting points or adapt to use current ones.

Have you done a log of what the MAT temps are?
