    ABY Oil cooler options?

Seems I'm in need of a new cooler for my ABY Avant. Age & corrosion, with the help of a well aimed stone have killed off my original one, so I'm wondering what my options are. The pipes seem ok too.

I've done some searching and found that an OE item (034 117 021) is around £290 from the stealers, that includes VAT so its "not too bad" according to the partsman haha! From quattro Corner its just under £180 (inc p&p) which is much better. Is there any other places for OE parts?

But I've read of a few using Mocal units, being aftermarket these seem cheaper to buy - are they any good? I've found some at http://www.thinkauto.com but not certain on which sizes I'd need, I found a thread on here were someone used a 7row 235mm item, is that enough or can a bigger item go in the original place (not that I need a larger cooler)?

Also, will the fittings need to be changed for a Mocal unit?

    Thanks for any advice

I looked at this replacement part previously, the part number 034 117 021 D is correct for an ABY engine AFAIK; €147 + shipping looks like a good price.

You won't find any other OEM suppliers as far as I am aware. Obviously the Audi one is a bolt on swap, there is work to be done to get an aftermarket one to fit. Unless you are really keen or want a bigger one (more power or track days) stick to the OEM one. IMO

        Cheers,

        Steve.

Thanks Fat, decided to stay OE as its easier (and cheaper) especially as its not under much stress as its not tracked or abused. I was surprised to find so few aftermarket stuff though, with seemingly only Mocal units being suggested on this forum in another thread - atleast that's for the original placing of the cooler, seems a relocation to where the aux rad is situated is popular.

Caddy, I believe the 3B has a different number, its a smaller cooler and seems most replace it with an ABY unit from the posts I found on here.

            Alternative Suppliers 034 117 021 D aftermarket replacements

I've been doing some research on this subject and have come up with only 2 aftermarket replacements at a reasonable price. I haven't tested either supplier yet. I have checked the measurements posted by each company against my rusty one and both seem fine.

            1. Aaron Radiator based in London www.aaronradiator.co.uk P/N 3AI104 £158 + Shipping (£10 off list price of £168 if you ask for it). Shipping £10 in the UK, £30 shipping to Ireland. 1 year warranty.

            2. Ebay seller www-hondaparts-de, this guy seems to be into all sorts so I wouldn't be too sure. He has another website www.ototeile.de but I can't find any information about him. Price is €147 + Shipping which costs €25 to UK / Ireland. Approx £155 all in.

As i'm in Ireland i'm going to try the one from Germany, would anybody be prepared to try the one from Aaron and report back.

I'm not sure if your saab 9000s in europe had these oil coolers but the one's here in the states have decently sized oil coolers. I pick up saab 9000 oil coolers at the local yards for $20.00 and then have my friend clean them at his transmission rebuild shop. I'm using one of these on my VR6T swap.
