      Whining noise

It's not as simple as it being your fan is it?
Mine used to whine on the lowest 2 speeds but was fine on the higher speeds.
Funnily enough it just went away - I had expected the motor to pack up.

Cheers chaps, I'll get them to check belts.

My attention's been diverted though to the huge plumes of smoke coming out of the back, and also to a lesser extent the engine bay..

        Will keep this updated.

Well although the oil level was full when I left this morning, now it's cooled down I've checked it and it's almost at minimum, after 150 miles today. Also there's a lot of oil here...

That could be leaking from the rear seals on the cam cover? There is a half moon seal which could have gone or maybe the whole gasket.

Mine looked similar, I washed it all off and replaced the cam cover gasket and it's been fine ever since. Cost about £30 or less from VAGparts IIRC.

It is easy to put one of the half moon bungs in the wrong position on the back of the cam cover. and they might move or fall out if you don't know what you are doing. Old ones tend to shrink and never fit properly if you try and reuse it - I think they should be replaced if removed.
