Jamo, I think your alternator could be knackered. My s2 stopped exactly as described above and with the alternator reconditioned it didn't do the same again. Reading your other thread I think it would be worth a bench test to eliminate it.

I would suspect power to the injectors in that the ECU is putting out the pulse but the injectors are not pulsing.
As said you have a spark, so the hall sender must be fine. Also, that wouldn't have cut it out while driving. As it is all the injectors i would think it is a common power that has gone, either a fuse blown or corrosion around the fuse blade etc.
Injector fuse would be my starting point. Especially after my recent similar problem with the V8. RAC did all the tests they did on your and it turned out the fuse was hanging out of the fuse holder. It was in just enough to make contact but when it fired the fuse moved and it cut out again. It makes a pretty effective immobiliser for when it's parked in the less desirable parts of town.

my first fail. gunning up a hill went for 5th and it felt like a wobble so lifted off. tried to start it again. only just started and died. fail cam sensor 1. original part
second time. cruisnig same hill after a quick smoking of a 2.7tdi A5. i short shifted lol. and it did the same. tried everything. changed the cam sensor again. endfed up being a snapped cam between lobes on 7a ex cam cyl4. miricle of no engine damage.
does it start, try to start, start and stumble. is it fueling, sparking.
id take a look at the 2nd vr crank polarity switch too.
You had me worried when I saw the thread title, I thought you'd crashed it
Anyway, you've said that you've being having problems with the battery charging recently, does the VEMS ECU have any sort of undervoltage protection, i.e. it will shut down or not work properly if the supply voltage drops below a certain point?

It expects 12 volts to it and I know from reading the VEMS wiki strange things happen under 11 volts.
The RAC man had his jump leads connected up to the car so I was seeing 13v with the ignition off during cranking. I've found an injector test routine in VEMSTUNE which allows you to turn on or off the individual injectors.
I had an expected phone call from Finland with Repo offering some great advice, most unexpected and appreciated
Thanks all, I've got a few things to try and I'll post back up once I've had a chance to looked them over
Glad you found the issue mate, i thought the same as Andy and was expecting to see a mangled car!
Fuse blowing could be a number of things - do they require more power than the original injectors? If not then possibly a short somewhere? These would most likely show themselves again if you replace it and it goes not long after. A break in the wire might earth out over a bump or something perhaps.
Replace it and keep a spare handy and see how it goes i guess - at least its nothing serious after all the work!!!

I'm wondering if it's in relation to the audspeed controller I removed..
I have a couple of batch of fuse boxes in the car, when I originally bought it it had a different set of HID's on the car which kept blowing the fuses so I stuck them on my old Coupe and they worked fine, way of the world
