Audi 90Q ABY conversion - Advice please

    Hi there,
Most of the way through an ABY conversion and wanted some input on the clutch I have on the ABY engine. Believe its duel mass?

The clutch on this car is so incredibly hard, its unreal!

Spoke with Tonks (many thanks) and he says that I need a UR clutch in there as my ABY one wont fit on the existing 90Q gearbox? It does fit but its like pushing the whole car when I press the clutch down? My cars not up and running yet...

Any one have any experience with this?

    Mant thanks

    James

Hi mate you need a wr flywheel or one off a 200 turbo apparently slightly lighter. A sachs performance wr clutch apparently better than the luk one. A needle roller bearing to fit into the rear of the crank to support the gearbox layshaft. And fit it all together without the spacer plate.

another option and one thats probably a lot cheaper/easier to sort than getting a new flywheel and clutch is to source a 20v 7a coupe quattro box and rear diff, afaik thats just a bolt on upgrade and will give you better ratios - what you think bri?

Sapphire cos running custom 2.8litre conversion,es cos rims, raven black leather interior and 500+ with the gas turned off.

I'm not sure on the output flange sizes and cv options. It seems to be a bit me a grey area everywhere. One of these days i will get every option out in the garage and take some pictures so we can see what fits what.

Thanks for your replies Tonks and UR... more money!

I want to build it on a budget, so whats going to be cheaper? WR clutch? How much?

          Also, needle bearing. Why?

          Thanks

S/H flywheel will be about £75
WR LUK clutch will be around the £200 mark
            Needle roller bearing is £11

Currently the bearing in your dual mass flywheel supports the layshaft.
when you fit the ur flywheel the layshaft passes all the way through the flywheel and locates into the end of the crank. Currently on your 20vt there is nothing there so you just push a small bearing inot it Part no: 046-105-313D. Becarful when fitting though it's a single direction bearing so you need to make sure you fit it the right way around.

                    That changes everything then.........

                    It's a typ 89, you need either a 7a flywheel or a 3B flywheel......
A 7a/3B clutch and forget about the bearing!!!!!

Wait a minute I have a 90q typ 89 too and I am doing an AAN swap. I used the 90 throw out bearing/tranny with the AAN flywheel and clutch. That works right?

With my ABY clutch and flywheel, when I press my foot on it, feels like I'm pressing down 40kg. Its that heavy! Tonks is the man...
So with the engine I've just sold, I need to get the clutch and flywheel back. Doh

Shame on Audi for not making the public aware of this.

I Have just been and measured the thickness of the following flywheels.

                              approx
                              AAN 42mm - Dual Mass
                              ABY 61mm - Dual Mass
                              7A 34mm - Solid

I guess with the ABY you would use the spacer ring. but I would deffinatly sack off the dual mass flywheels as with bigger power they tear/get worn etc and can vibrate do a search for the common failure of them on here.
