    Smoking issue

    Hey guys,

Okay put it on here before but it is still acting strange.

Right sometimes does sometimes doesnt so it is not consistant and there is nothing I can think of that would be the precursor to it starting.

    Next

It will smoke if I leave to idle for a few mins but not all the time.

It does not smoke if I start and drive off

Smoke is of a light white colour and does not smell of burning oil - smells more of just unburnt fuel - running rich for startup and warm up as supposed to - sometimes just a small puff - other times the comment has been made is your car on fire

I am thinking turbo seals possibly on the way out as this would explain within reason why it does not smoke when driving off straight away.

thoughts - I am off next week for 4 days and plan to have a good strip and clean around the engine bay and have a good mooch to see if anything obvious (taking the intercooler off to see if that has alot of oil in it?

Worth fitting a catch tank too????

    Cheers

Is smoking for few minutes after startup and then is ok?
Iff so...the turbo seals are gone...and probably the exaust side.
I had same problem with mine....startup fine and after few seconds started to smoke then after few minutes was ok.
    Hope this helps!
    Regards!

Get a compression test done Az, could be head gasket. Is it old or recently replaced?

If you do get the head off, check for cracks.

Test results are in and lets say I am not particularly happy with them - All cylinders 3 times and the average took (although all still the same) :-

              1 - 85 PSI
              2 - 120 PSI
              3 - 110 PSI
              4 - 105 PSI
              5 - 115 PSI

Okay think cylinder one may be a problem - All sparks were a little bit coked up except 2 (which we though would be the problem) which was clean as a whistle otehr than a touch at the spark point.

              Thoughts suggestions?

Head rebuild? If I do do I need a bottom end rebuild?

Any info / advice greatly received - Going a lil bit out of my mind

              Cheers

Just checked my and bar wise they are peaked at 8.5 which does seem a bit low compared to the searching that I have done. time to get the head off and have a good look me thinks!!!!

Might have to see if i can borrow the old mans car to get to work and back for the time it is off the road.

What would be the definative list of bits to buy for a rebuild. Please add to list for me - -and where best to get them...

                    1. Crank shells
                    2. Big end shells
                    3. Full gasket set - Do these include sump gaskets??
                    4. Valve stem Seals
                    5. Valve guides
                    6. Piston Rings

Looks like I got a lot of work to do and want to keep the cost down so other than honing etc if needed I will do most of the work myself with a bit of help from my garage owning friend :

                    Cheers for any help guys..

Oooo would I have to do the bottom end if there is a valve poblem??? Could I just do the head or would that stress out the old parts?? Cheers

It does all seem a little low. Number 1 definitely has a problem and is as said probably a valve.

Before taking it apart poor a small amount of oil down the bores and do another compression test. If the pressure is higher this time around it will show the problem is with the bores, pistons, rings or all three.

Number 1 looks like it has another issue over and above the above.

In truth you will never know until the head comes off but this test will give you a steer.

                        Hope it helps.

                        Darren.

105PSI is the minimum allowance on our car IIRC...

you said "white smoke">>>>any loss of coolant?
