    My ever present leak.......some progress

Some of you will remember me constantly banging on about an air leak in my car and it's habit of loosing boost. I spent a morning with Paul N today and tried a few things:

Leak tested everything - in stages including all small vacuum pipes, crankcase breathers and green and pink 'hard' vacuum pipes to diff and ECU.
    No leaks at all!

Went out in the car to show Paul the problem - loosing boost and the 'whooshing' noise is so loud that Paul thought the car was haunted and it was a ghost

Came back to his place. Put the latest generation of chips in the car and off we went again. This time boosts and keeps it finally but still a ****** great 'whooshing' noise I was on normal 95 ron petrol so it only boosted to about 1.2 bar. On the way back home I put 97 ron (could only find BP) and it holds about 1.3 bar up to 5000 rpm before it starts to trail off. I reckon a quick tweak of the WG spring (as I have messed about with it in the past) will se me at 1.4 bar

So I have the boost, car feels smoother and stronger and mpg is a bit better too but what the hell is the 'whooshing' noise Paul N say’s he's never heard anything like it on a standard turbo and intake system. The turbo was completely rebuilt by AET 7,500 miles ago.

Suggestions gratefully received as the turbo only has 4 days left before the 12 months guarantee is out is the noise a prelude to it dying and if so why after only 7,500 miles?

Cheers for your help and hospitality Paul

So you're using a standard paper type panel filter ? You get more of a 'whooshing' noise with the cotton & wire mesh type. My Jetex panel filter is a lot louder vs standard....

yeah a panel or cone will be much louder and you will certainly hear the turbo wind up/induction noise followed by a pretty large whoosh on changing gear or lifting off. it will be a sharp dump if you are gunning it or if you are being a bit lazy then a whooooooosh. if you are at Combe you can compare the sound with mine which has a k&n cone to see if it is the same/similar sound.

Yeah I'm on a totally standard intake system.

I've emailed AET as they are not open today, hopefully I'll have a reply on Monday. I presume that now I have brought a possible problem to their attention *just* before the end of the guarantee it will still be covered.
