Are they all like this ?

I find that the revs are a little slow to drop on my ABY engined S2. What I mean for example is that when changing from 1st up to 2nd you have to wait longer than I think you should for the revs to fall to the appropriate level to match the higher gear and make a smooth gear change. If I let the clutch up too early there are just too many revs for a smooth change. Before anybody asks, yes I do take my foot off the gas !
I'm just talking normal driving as well - not 6k plus or anything or rapid shifting.
It's not so bad in the higher gears but it's very obvious betwen 1st and 2nd. Maybe there is a bigger gap between these two than the others but are they all like this - is there anything that could cause the revs to fall so lazily, any simple mods to help.
It's a stock engine but has been chipped (not homefy) - could that affect it.

Thats an odd one alright... not sure how an ECU could affect that behaviour but would be worth plugging in a stock ECU to see if it behaves the same.

Sure its not a slightly sticky throttle cable or something restricting the throttle body spring ????

Check the throttle, throttle cable and throttle damper. The last 500 revs from 1500 down to about 1000 should be damped by the small plastic piston on the end of the throttle stop. The ABY does have a dual mass flywheel so the revs do drop slightly slower than on other cars, but it should not affect the gear changes...

Had this on my 7A which was caused by an air leak on one of the intake manifold hoses. Having said that if you have an air leak on an S2 you would know all about it

Mine does this too, seems to be more prominent when first driving off when its cold. Throttle damper, idle switch etc are fine on mine, and i've just replaced some trully knackered hoses. No change. I just assumed "it's a characteristic of the vehicle sir".

Throttle damper - ditch it. DM flywheel can be a bit sluggish too.

And slightly off topic, why were the last ABYs not fitted with the throttle damper at all?

I like my throttle damper too... I think my car would stall while coasting down when the engine is cold without it.

The damper prevents the revs from dropping too fast. I can see how a really stiff / stuck damper could have a detrimental effect with revs dropping much too slowly between gears and coasting down.

Not had one for 5 years, absolutely no problems with it and the car is much easier to drive in traffic as when you let off the pedal, it stops accelerating! Nothing worse than a sticky or poorly adjusted TD, they're a waste of space IMO.
