lets face it we have talked rods loads of times and the expense, even though its not that much if you do the work yourself and the complications put people off.

As an IT manager i am not a mechanic. the most dirt i see here is some muppet who eats cheese butties over their keyboard. i like to get stuck in though and face a challenge. if you have a mate who is good with cars ask them. you may soon find yourself on a steep learning curve and have less xx per hour to pay somebody who for all you know hasn't worked on an I5 either. not many have.

i enjoy doing jobs. i must say i prefer engines and mapping to suspension and brakes though. so long as there is a challenge.

I think Sal did in his S2 back in the day, 6 or so years ago, 2bar with his RS2 turbo. Turbo didnt like it much but rods were ok with it IIRC.

I do agree with you though, i'd do rods if pushing that turbo to the limit.

Is this really the case? I always thought it was the 3b bearings that weren't hardened.

from what ive seen the bearings all look similar to 16v ones. i used audi aby ones. they are difffernet colour top and bottom IIRC.

              no issues so far.

ABY & ADU are definitely sputter... Some late AAN ones might be, but I dunno for sure.
