Trying to gauge interest on ECU stuff

I was just wondering what the interest would be from folk here on more ECU upgrades - be that RR, 3B, AAN, ABY or ADU.

    1. I guess that most people that want an ECU upgrade have something already or are there still some folk looking to take the plunge in the future ?

    2. Are there many homefry users interested in an upgrade to something more aggressive - perhaps with a stiffer WG spring (this will be what I call the 'X-stream' option) as this is something I need to invest time and effort into so it runs right ?

    3. What about hot-switchable ECUs - I have received fewer requests for these than I expected - maybe this option (with the ability to select factory or 'sport' mode along with an additional 'valet/spouse' mode) is not well enough known or understood ?

    4. Is there much interest for a generic upgrade that works with GT2871/3071 on 440cc injectors ?

Reason for this is that I hopefully have some time to crunch a bit of effort into this over the summer and I have spare 3B, ABY and ADU ECUs that can be used to good effect. Beyond summer it could get tight for my time so thats why I am curious to see what current users thoughts are on where I should best spend any energy on things of this nature.

    Hi Paul,

I for one would be interested in an RS2 upgrade for the 3B, ie, with new rods and most RS2 parts... maybe a stiffer spring if specced....

I thought this was something you had almost finished working on...

I have more to do on the RS2 upgrade for 3B - given me some headaches without hands-on access to one - but yes it should be on that list of options.

with stock spring or something stiffer on the 3B - like 0.8-0.9bar mechanical boost ?

I have a notion that the stiffer spring is going to change the character to something less user-friendly in traffic and daily duties - it will be much better suited to the weekend for fun, trackdays and such with the onset of boost being that much more aggressive.

Stiff WG spring takes a little getting used to but you just use less right foot to get moving, it's a bit like the more modern drive by wire cars in that a small throttle opening has more of an effect, it's not that it's a PITA, it's just different to the very laggy stock S2 setup on anything other than WOT. It also means that boost buildup is almost instant and there's not of the sponginess in response to WOT application.

Paul, you know what I'm after with the X stream, severe WG spring with razor sharp spool, no temp. compensation and a little more up top for the freer flowing exhaust, perhaps an XXX stream

Switchable chipsets are a good idea with a 0.4bar mechanical boost only map for fuel economy and safety for less experienced or trusted pilots and then have the N stream or V stream on the other side or for eth X stream, just spring boost that'll drop off more, thus limiting power quite a bit, although not torque.

The N stream has worked well on mine for 3 years, the car drives superbly and indeed I've reverted back to this setup after development testing on more than one occasion, this needs no work IMO, it's ideal for any daily car or for those wanting a more relaxed cruiser.

The T stream was more aggressive (needed a little more fuel IIRC), the midrange was much improved and the car went like stink on it! Can't remember the difference between N and V stream.

Generic 28/3071 upgrades are a great idea for the UK market but not many people just bolt these on without a few other upgrades too so perhaps there's less demand for them than a custom map that get the most out of it all. A stock rod option might do best here?

What about developing your own hybrid turbo, injector and ECU setup for a small hybrid, not cos it'll make you money but because it's Should be about £1000 bolt on with an upgraded manifold and maybe RS2 IC.

Ramblings rather than an answer, sorry about that

              Hi Paul!

              1. I have a cheap *bay chip in for 2 years now (stock ABY btw), i guess yours are waaay better.. (never checked AFR so far..)
Paul, are you interested in havin' a look at the bins?
              2. YES, a fry aligned with a stiffer WG spring is definately an option
              3. NO. My right foot is sufficient as a switch, the S2 is my daily driver and mostly i'm driving 'calm'
              4. YES. Next step could be an 2871 with 440cc injectors as I'm looking for torque in the low revs
... but .. as many on here I'm thinking of skipping this step and going straight the 2.5l GT30xx dBB Wagner EM/IM/IC way...

@Andy - forgot to tell you I had tweaked the V-stream again... lil richer at the top so PM your address again and I can send you something to taste. I will have to take the plunge on the bed spring though - the emulator could use some cobwebs being blown out of it Will keep you posted on that.

@Smiley - some poeple get lucky with eBay chips as sometimes they are ripoffs from MTM, MRC, myself or others - the price is usually a big selling point, but there are some really ropey chips around as well. I can look at yours if you wish.

maybe so high end developement paul. either as an interim or permanent. some ideas

                  1. high poerformance build chip for 650cc seimmens, a common injector.
                  2. high performance for interim period until custom mapping/ecu. most fit the parts or dont fit them and worry can it be driven to the mapper, will it start etc. most need a road mapped solution and cannot afford to have a car in bits or trailored. they need bolt on and chip or mapping straight away. sometimes peiple cant afford it.
                  3. it seesm that 28/3071 i becoming the norm/old hat. also there are lots prividing this already. i think its too small for a lot nowadays especially if they are rs2 already.
                  4. see if you can develop E85 for motronic.
5.maybe mafless motronic with an smt6 or something.

the rest is custom. id concentrate on gareet based units from the 2871 to the gt35r. these are 80% of the turbos out there. other units can usually be matched around their sizes so just a few tweaks.

the needs and wants of I5 are so diverse its not like the chipping 1.8t market where there are 1000's wanting 30-40 hp. on I5 some want an extra 50 hp some want extra 500hp

I bought a homefry donkeys years ago, would be interested to know if there has been much development over the years, would it be worth while upgrading?

RS2 chipsets, i will want a multimap ECU at some stage for an RS2 spec engine with rods, ideally a stock map and high boost map that i can switch between.

Or possibly a multimap for the stock ABY, as in a daily driver map, and a V-Stream all out map would be nice.

Good inputs chaps... Gazza has some great ideas there, but some would require a lot of time and dedication. The E85 idea interests me the most, but I have access to such juice - something switchable with that vs an ordinary petrol setup could be cool if it was possible, but it might not be viable in pure software.

Switchable RS2 N-Stream (max boost 1.5bar) & V-Stream (max 1.9bar) has been done... 'V' needs a little enrichment on the top end based on one dyno run so far.

@mark - I can let you have a taste of ABY V-Stream if you wanna see how that goes on Dublin petrol. I can make that a multimap job as well of course.

Size wise they are in similar ball park - depends on small print of exactly what housings, wheels and such. K26/27 has old school bearings versus faster spooling roller type in the Garret's but they can surge if not mapped carefully - depends on cam choice to some degree as well.

Wish there was a local 3B that I could play with...

id say if you can do a good cruise map for 650cc and maybe limit it to a bar boost so approx 300-400hp you would be on the money for interim.

the stock fuel pump will handle those figures just about too.

think the issues with E85 are. can you alter lambda levels and targets for the probe, will you get a good enough idle on say 1000cc injectors on 95 ron as on E85. can motronic handle such big injectors, how do the fuels mix, what happens if somebody decides to run the E85map on 95ron.
