    Serpentine Belt Conversions. How?

I have been struggling with trying to acquire pictures, post, links, or any other information on how to convert my 3B Coupe over to a serpentine belt setup and still maintain the air conditioning.

Anyone have more info that they can send my way?

I, as a stupid 'murcan, am trying to make an S2 coupe from a US Spec Coupe Quattro and have used a combination of UrS4/6 AAN, 200 20vT, and 7A bits and spares. I am presently using a 3B engine with an AAN crank dampener/pulley, all of the other related serpentine pulleys, but in leaving the AC compressor on the side of the radiator, there is clearance issues with the AAN AC Compressor pipe fittings, so I would like to move it back to the side of the turbo. This being said... if there is a list specific spares I require (and you would be willing to ship this way, that would be excellent!) or a list of spares from other madels that I can use to make the serpentine belt work, that would be very helpful.

    Thank you!!!

serp belts are not the norm.

basically the S2 has belts like a 16v.

i think there will be issues with setting this up.

the only things i can think of are to use aba parts. similar to if you did an aba 16v and converted to serp setup.

There are a few issues, that's why I am "throwing it out there" for imput. The ABA idea is similar and the Bahn Brenner 16vSC is closest to anything that will work.

Another idea I am tossing around is making a V-belt pulley to mount where the clutch fan was on the UrS4/AAN motor. If i were to do this, it would be the only belt requiring tensioning (easy enough to get at from the underside of the car), but I am worried about clearing the stub mount/core support bracket for the coupe and in turn thge intercooler piping.

Why aren't you bolting on the OE S2 stuff as this all clears the issues you mention... The AAN damper is incorrect for the 3B engine BTW, they're different weights. Why not get ABY stuff and an ABY AC pump and brackets?

Because no one wants to help me out, give it to me, or even ship to the US, LOL.

I just hate adjusting V-belts and am trying to clean up the engine bay (shaved and tucked).

The motor is actually a fully built AAN with a 3B oil pan and a RS2 intake manifold (bored "20" over, rods, pistons, and a stroker crank, as well as, a full internal balance!), so the weight of the crank pulley doesn't much effect things.

3B didnt have serp belt for good reason... clearance reasons - so you will either have to custom fabricate something along lines of AAN approach, or just purchase the 3B/ABY items you need to run with V-belts. You should be able to swap the compressor pulley over to v-belt variety. Setting tension on those two belts is a piece of cake that you might need to do every two years so I wouldn't sweat about that myself.

              Right, no worries then.

Yeah, it's a faff... even in the UK we struggle to get stuff from Germany Give me a shout if you need a hand with any parts from the UK. although we're RHD over here

I'm not aware of the serpentine belt setup, was this an AAN item or later? The V belts aren't the neatest but they work fine and should last well enough...

              Good luck with it.

The next one I build (in the process of gathering spares; motor and such) is DEFINITELY going to be V-belts.

This one however, is something I just cannot give up on yet! The pulleys on the compressor do not swap (AAN to 7A. Shaft size and such are different). Along with the V-belt driven AC compressor of the clutch fan idler is the possiblity of using a Toyota Prius Hybrid AC compressor... ELECTRIC!

The main bits I need for this present and a bit over the top project is a S2 oil pan wing, possibly the oil filter bracket with the cooler line hook-ups (different angle than the AAN I believe), and a front bumper!

Get a pulley machined up, could be a simple job.

I'm not sure if this is inline with what you're doing, but I have an AAN installed with the full serpentine set-up. I have what I believe is the same issue you're describing, but maybe not... - I say maybe not because my solution would be simple, with a minor sacrifice of the radiator position. I do not (at this point) want to sacrifice my radiator position, even though it would be minimal; -on the order of 1 - 2 inches to squeeze 90 degree fittings on the back of the compressor.
What I've done to make this possible was just cut off part of the aluminum compressor mount (allowing stock radiator position). There should be pictures linked in my sig, but again I don't know for certain if this addresses your issue. It should be mentioned obviously that custom lines would be needed as well.

Have and CAD or design experience to design me up something nice, aka: a pully to mount to the threads of the serpentine idler on an AAN and maintain the same spacing away from the block/alignment as the AC compessor mounted on a factory (under turbo bracket)? My design experience id more crude fabrication foloowed by refinement and I dont have a CNC machine...booo.

Already cut that AAN AC compressor bracket to get the radiator in there with plenty of clearance.

Can you just clarify the above post, there are too many mistakes for me to understand what you're trying to say.

If you need help with CAD or manufacture then I'm happy to help - drop me a PM or email.

Sorry for my mistakes and "crappy" 'murican dialect...

Do you have any AutoCAD or manufacture design experience that will alllow you to design me a pulley, specifically a V-belt pulley to mount on the clutch fan idler pulley (on the threads presently there which used to hold the clutch fan), and maintain the same spacing away from the block/alignment as the AC compessor mounted on a factory (under turbo bracket)?

My design experience id more crude fabrication foloowed by refinement and I dont have a CNC machine, or even access.

What is your email address? I can rough sketch something on Microsoft Paint or a hand sketch scanned, and you can therefore see my idea.

I've done a little CAD in my time

There's a fair bit of info required but if it's possible then we'll sort a pulley out. Mine was an aircon equipped ABY before I ditched it - the joys of a temperate climate
