    Coolant leak, please help!

Ok, so after I returned from GTI last night I discovered a fairly major coolant leak, from fully topped up on Friday to way below low yesterday evening.

There is no mayo on the oil cap and no signs of white smoke, phew!

There appears to be some coolant collecting at the bottom of the engine bay.

I am a bit of a novice with the spanner but was wondering if anyone could advise me how to go about diagnosing/fixing the problem.

    Many thanks in advance

Thanks Lee, been under the bonnet today and I have found where it is leaking from and going to attempt to explain where from!

Behind, the secondary radiator two pipes lead into a rubber more solid, thing! Then this goes into a metal pipe. It is the rubber solid thing that is leaking from underneath. If this makes sense to anyone, do you know if it comes off easily, I couldn't see how it does and is it easy to replace?

thats your auxillary water pump. the plastic ends do tend to break off. Quattro Corner £95 + postage. 10 minute job to change.

there is a lot written here about these pumps. I posted the part number again a few weeks ago.
There is a cheaper version available that fits a vw transporter and a few others that you can get from GSF for £65 but you have a small mod to make to the electrical connections.

Wait until the engine is cold so the coolant don't burn ya
Remove the 2 jubilee clips holding on the 2 hoses.
Remove the electrical connection. There's a little spring clip there that's a bit of a pain.
Rotate and slide the pump out of the rubber mountings. Some water & washing up liquid might make it easier to extract the pump.
You're going to loose about half of the coolant out of the car if not already gone.

A couple of brake hose clamps or other will stop the leaks from the pipes while you change it. Refil any lost fluid with G12+

              Easy job...

Get that changed, Rusty got hot coolant burns from that pipe when it failed on him.

I had the same thing on my avant. In the end Ichanged it for a S4 pump which fits with no aggro with the electrical connections & is a better design & wont leak.

you can buy VAG G12+ or G12++ from your local audi garage, 1.5l I put in mine about €12/£10, fill it up the rest of the way to the mark with water.
