    Distributor shaft diameter?

Would anybody know the shaft size on the 3B/7A Distributor?

I was tinkering with the 7A and found the dizzy has about 3mm of endfloat when its push it in/out. I need to order some stainless shims but dont fancy taking it all apart just to measure it.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

I had to reshim shim mine when I put the metal gear on Mark, i'm convinced that is more often the cause of the dizzy rattle than the crumbly plastic gears TBH

          Perfect thank you

I agree about the ratttle, that and a worn cam chain can create all kinds of nasty dizzy noises. I did shim it when i rebuilt the head and fitted the brass gear, but that was way back about six years ago...

One things for sure, the ignition timing is all over the place at the moment. I must measure the free play it has now, were talking the thickness of the rotor arm

The first time i was at a machine shop to press the gear pin out, they had a big tray of stainless shims i could pick through. Haven't figured out where to get them this time... I do have a bunch for Nitro engined RC cars so hobbiest shops might be a good source.

I've just used regular stainless washers, I put them on the linisher to make sure they were flat, just kept taking a bit more off until I got to 5 thou end float.

Nice solution, i was having a hard time differentiating shims from washers while searching around. Any i found were traditional washers for holding a bolt down, nothing machined well enough for this purpose.

                  Cheers,

Spent most of the afternoon running around trying to source these, tried a few Alternator/Starter specialists, ignition specialists, and finally a trade supplier that had a catalogue of shims but the closest fit was 12mm ID or 14mm ID, i needed 12.5mm to fit the dizzy. They basically shook there heads and said Bosch must have used a non standard size on purpose.

They pointed me across the road to a guy who specialised in repairing power tools, drills, grinders etc. After about 20 minutes searching through a box of broken tools he managed to salvage a few shims. Ironically there from a Bosch cordless drill
