Bit of a coincidence has happened here.Had my car booked in for a cambelt change at white cottage quattros and was just talking to pete about this thread and the concerns people were expressing.
Anyway to shorten the story Pete phoned me today and told me that in inspecting the pulley(which he does as a matter of course)he had found a blooming great crack in the blighter
He also said that this could have failed at any given moment.
One more thing he also told me to do was to go and but a lottery ticket because I was one lucky fecker.
Cannot begin to describe how lucky I feel that the sucker didn't fail on me
Off to buy a lottery ticket now

dont mention cam pulleys mate, everyone will advise that you didnt tighten the crank pulley correctly and say you didnt put it together correctly, regardless of your motorsport building background!
lol, Jogi just buy a dahlback one mate and be done with it.
im only replacing my CAM pulley with another OE one as its quicker due to my A4 being a daily drive.
Dahlback pulley and 034 sprockets on their way as we speak.
where in west london are you?
send em a PM as i wanna look at your motor, was gonna build a TQ saloon but sold the project when i moved down here.

So let`s say for arguments sake he does one 9 sek pull everyday for a year, 365dx9s=3285s wich turns into 54 minutes of driving.... I cleary understand that these 54 minutes ( wich we all know is an inflated number since he doesn`t do 365 pulls a year ) is under max power running full on through the revs. On the other hand a drag car performs virtually zero engine braking, resulting in the pulley only turning one way 95% of the time.Fair enough
9 second drag car check the cam wheel
If you really want to look at reliability you should turn to circuit cars, cars who do prolonged runs at a track. A circuit car runs from 1 hour to as much as 24 hours with full engine accelleration and full engine decellereration in just one weekend, you do the math on longevity.
Most of the forum users here have street cars way surpassing both the drag car and the circuit car in terms of engine running time. Over a weeks use the actual running time of the street engine could be as much as 10 seasons for a drag car. Movement is what kills the woodruff key, as long is there is no play, shearing it off would take immense torque to the pulley. Torque wich would be a factor of friction and inertia in the valve drivetrain. The more aggressive ramping on the cams and the more aggressive valve springs the larger the load on the woodruff key. Highly tuned engines should be inspected on a regular basis for wear and tear. The dream of everlasting high power engines is just that, a dream.
What every choice you make, inspect it according to use.
Ps. So far I`ve been using the stock unit. Took it off an engine with 144.000km on it. The pulley has been used for circuit racing for 3 seasons pushing 660bhp and is still in mint condition.Comment

having had 2 fail and no engine damage i can confirm the stock items are weak and of bad design i feel. unless its designed to break.
the issue is not its strength when runnnig but when removing and refitting.
1. the key is smaller than the opening in the cam creating movement.
2. locking the cam with a spanner is fine on the lumps but the pulley due to the design still moves.
3. as its being nipped up the pulley rotates as the bolt grabs creating fatigue on the key.
basically at this stage the key is gone and the bolt torque is holding the pulley on. the next classic mistake is rotating the engine by the cam bolt.
my tips are.
1. lock cam with spanner.
2. hold pulley and gently wind the bolt in to hold the pulley in place.
3. slowly torque her up.
but first double tripple check the pulley. i ve been lucky. 2 broken pulleys and a snapped cam and no engine damage.
still no lottery win though.Comment
